Here's a few safety tips for the next time you’re driving in cold weather:
1.) Drive slow, much slower than you normally would.
2.) Increase the distance between you and the car in front of you, this gives you more space to stop.
3.) Pump the brakes, do not slam on the brakes. Slamming on the brakes can cause spinouts.
4.) If your car starts to skid, don’t overcorrect, turn into the skid and always avoid swerving into oncoming traffic.
5.) Check the tread on your tires. Don’t drive on “bald” tires. Or better yet, use snow tires in the winter.
6.) Keep a winter emergency kit in your car, including a blanket and flashlight.

In Greece, we call "black ice" the pavement which is moist and feels like there is liquid soap spilled on it. You can feel it even while you walk and it's really slippery. It usually happens when it rains for a few minutes or after sunset, when the humidity is high and everything becomes moist.

7. If you are driving a manual, and you're on black ice, do engine braking. Basically shift down to the 1st gear and that will inevitably make your car reduce speed without actually braking. Also works for hydroplaning
