When you were talking about the redundancy all I can think of is that scene in the devil wears Prada. "Florals for spring. Groundbreaking." Lol

I love hearing your thoughts on trends, and I feel like the redundancy kind of comes with trends. Fashion trends are just old trends that are being cycle through, but I feel like with the age of the internet, trends cycle through so much more quickly. Right now im pretty comfortable with my whimisgoth witchy vibes as I’m exploring the more spiritual side of myself.

on 8:50 when I wear Cheetah print, I WANT it to be tacky, that adds an extra layer of ~outfit~ to me, men hate a woman being tacky so I LOOOOVE a tacky cheetah print outfit. I used to hate it growing up, but I realized it was the social shorthand for a "cheap" woman and that I was suffering from internalized misogyny. I love wearing things tacky.

i think we are seeing the start of a significant shift in the fashion industry, with fashion trends and fast fashion/overconsumption running itself into the ground. with the rise in popularity of thrifting, i think slowly that will become the main resource for acquiring clothing and that really makes people think about their personal style. everyone wants to be unique individuals and i think with there being enough clothes on earth to clothe the next six generations of people, we can cycle through and combine old trends and pieces and diy things into infinite combinations for us to play around with. fashion is becoming more sustainable and postmodern, which kinda makes things like fashion mags and predictions redundant.

I miss print fashion magazines so much! They were always a complete and total feast for the eyes. When I was in high school in 04-07ish, my dream was to be a magazine editor. I had a Teen Vogue subscription, and even my dad (not even remotely a fashion person) enjoyed flipping through it because it was like looking through a book of art.

Hell yeah, to Bratz doll fashion. I wasn't allowed to have them myself but I always knew they were way cooler than Barbie.

I definitely love to see the eighties fashion comeback, mostly because I consider myself a huge extravagant maximalist in fashion sence, and when such styles become popular, as we all know, it is much easier to find amaizing pieces at thrift and secondhand stores.
(And this is also just a me thing but I am so glad colors are coming back. It feels so wiered to say it but… where did the colors go? I am kind of tired of all the clothes everywhere being in blacks and neutrals. Like color is fun! Please!)

Fashion these days doesn’t feel like people have a point of view, it just feels like everything and nothing is trending simultaneously because the emphasis is on consumption not curation. Whether it be a subculture, hobby group, or lifestyle in the pre social media and fast fashion era people’s clothes said something about them, about their politics, music taste, whether they were artsy or travelled a lot etc now everything feels flat and meaningless. Clothing is just another product to consume. So many YouTubers I watch who have heaving closets say they wear sweats everyday, what’s the point of owning clothes that you aren’t even excited to wear?
I want to feel as excited to wear my clothes as little kids feel when they get something they love and you have to peel it off them to wash it cos they’ve been sleeping in it and wearing it everywhere for days.

18:16 yes!! I’ve seen tons and tons of online influencers just wearing that, i mean it’s cute, boxers are just like the fun shorts. But seeing thousands of them wearing the exact same thing in the exact same way makes it boring. There’s always the baby tee or a tank top with an oversized shirt with the boxers, long socks, adidas samba and the cap😞😞😞for a hundredth time, it’s cute but if you’re gonna make fashion your thing at least personalized it a bit PLEASE😭 make it fresh and interesting.

Happy new year to you too!!

8:26 I agree with you but on the other hand I think it’s a good thing we’re recycling and renaming trends that already exist because this means we don’t have to build a whole new wardrobe to fit in new trends. I’m actually tired of all these microtrends popping up everywhere and not sticking around!

Fun watch and very informative! I handmake items and like to pay a lot of attention to trends. I think some of what we're seeing now that you've outlined in your video (the repetition) is corporations trying to play it safe a bit! I can tell they've been struggling big time the last 4-5 years with micro-trends and the general unwillingness of the younger generation to eat up whatever they're handed. The younger gen just doesn't care what vogue or whoever says is in style and I think that's great!

I know when I was younger in the 90s-2000s, we basically had no choice but to wear lowrise jeans (that's all that was made, unless you went to walmart or country stores to buy literal dad/cowboy jeans)! Subcultures also don't really exist like they used to (like goth, prep, hipster, where you had brick and mortar stores to go to that represent those specific and strong subcultures), which just drives big stores crazy. Your subculture used to define your group of friends, your music, your hobbies, all enforced by peer pressure! Corporations just can't put their finger on the pulse, or drive the trends anymore.

And stuff like "sailor core" and stripes, well, nautical style stripes were huge in France a few years ago and it seems like we're catching up now! I've seen corps try out smaller trends and fail repeatedly over the last 4-5 years, so it makes a lot of sense to see more "tried and true" options!

I used to work for a number of Conde Nast magazines. A couple of thoughts based on my experience:

Fashion has always been based on what the inventive, cool kids find in thrift and vintage stores. These cool kids worked as fashion assistants at the magazines or for the designers, and influenced the more senior people. The kids see a lot of neglected preppy stuff or Y2K stuff, start buying and appreciating them, and suddenly they are in style. (One of the reasons why I'm pretty judicious about adopting a trending style. I have to really personally love it, otherwise I'm very style neutral/under the radar stylewise.)

Designers and stylists were also known to look at older magazines, say a couple of decades older, for inspiration (aka directly ripping off earlier designs).

You can tell designers and magazines are getting nervous about sales when the big trends are direct rehashes of recent trends, or if they call certain tried and true colors or prints as a trend. Pale pink, maroon, stripes, and animal prjnts ? Athleisure and lace? They are very, very nervous about sales. I think they are seeing the impact of inflation on people's wallets and also the real trends of people thrifting more and going on no buys.

i could’ve guessed you were an 80s music person! you look like annie lennox and ziggy stardust combined lol. love the blue eye look <3

on trends: i feel like the soft pink is so late? it seems like coquette and balletcore have kind of crested already. but also i’m mostly off social media so maybe im wrong 🤷

Its pretty wild that dark red and animal print are for the next year because that tells me that social media really actually organically manifested that in the back end of 2024 if the fashion industry is only now taking note

I will spend this year continuing experimenting and developing my style. Working on utilizing the piece I got in 2024, by less and if I do, try to get it second hand
