I had an experience talking about my boss to a coworker, explaining how he had gone to bat for me when he didn't need to, how he had gone out of his way to help me multiple times, and how much I appreciated him.
Boss was standing on the other side of a divider and I didn't know.
Super glad I was being complimentary.

This has always been my rule:
“Never say something behind a person’s back that you won’t say it to their face!”

My wife and I are both retired educators. She has given me much sage advice over the years, and I have not been too proud to accept most of it. One such piece was “Always speak to students as if their parents were standing right behind them.”

Couple years ago I had enough of our top remodeler. He was definitely more skilled and experienced than the rest of our employees. Problem was he knew it and used it to be lazy and inconsistent. After a couple warnings I fired him. Everyone was shocked we fired 'the best guy'. But then productivity went up because everyone else fell in line and realized what the expectation was. Getting rid of negative people in your company is worth more than anyone realizes until they are gone.

I love it! This is as it should be. If you are going to talk smack about your boss to their staff it is best you don't stay.

I worked for a bank years ago and they were talking about maybe closing several of the smaller offices. I called the VP to ask if I should be looking for another job if they were going to be closing our offices. He stated he didnt have anything he wanted to share with me. So i asked how much notice we would get before they closed our office. His response floored me: "If you get a pink slip in the envelope with your paycheck on Friday, dont worry about coming back on Monday." He said it in such a rude, i dont give a damn about you manner, that I responded with, "I guess today is my last day then. I need to go look for another job." He immediately stammered and said, "You cant quit without giving two weeks notice!" I said, "Well, you didnt seem to mind letting me go without any notice, so I guess I was just following your example." Next time I quit a job, I was a little smarter and made sure I already had my next job, but i never really regretted it.

Later, he was evidently complaining to his boss at headquarters about my quitting and my smart mouth comment to him. His boss at headquarters called me and asked me if I wanted to move to his city and apply to work in his office.

There is a huge difference between disagreeing with a policy or plan and disrespecting the owner. If you have a problem with anyone, address it personally, not in a group setting.

I was employed by a company whose top salesman was a real piece of work. After a while he thought he simply couldn't be fired. He learned otherwise one day.

I worked for a doctors office for about 2 1/2 years. One day I was asked what my problem was, that I wasn’t talking or laughing or socializing with the others in the office. I told her I was working and that I didn’t have time because we were a call center on the phone call that needed to be answered all the time, although the others were not answering the phone at all. She said let’s go back into the office and see if we can get this worked out. As we were walking in the other two girls I was working with we’re laughing about how they had made trouble for me again. I didn’t say anything I just sat down. My boss asked one of the girls go ahead and ask her what her problem is that she’s being so rude to the two of you. The girl proceeded to complain about the expression on my face, punching the phone keys loudly like I was pissed, and going to the bathroom every two hours, and especially going home for lunch. I told her I’m sorry you’re offended by the way I look, but this is the way I look. As far as punching the keys on the phone too hard, the keys are sticking and I’ve already asked IT to replace my phone and as far as going home for lunch, excuse me I didn’t realize you were my boss even though I’m off the clock and I do come back within an hour. Later that day, the assistant director called me in and asked me why I was so defensive and why I just didn’t get along with anybody else in the company. I explained this is a call center and I’m just busy doing my job. I didn’t know it was required of me to please everybody, to change the look on my face, to not answer the call and work on their time, even though I’m off the clock. He proceeded to tell me you really should fake it to make it if you want to keep working here. I got up and walked out and never looked back. I was never so humiliated in my life. I’ve never had to work in a place where I had to fake it to make it, the money wasn’t that good anyway!

Negativity is something that easily swallows us up. We really struggle to overcome it. It's that weakness that nobody wants, but it's there.

There have been times in my life I might have wished I stood up for myself instead of being quiet, but I never had to regret saying things when I was smart enough to be quiet.

I have a rule whenever I am at work. Assume I’m being recorded. Even though I’m not, you never know.

Was running a Basic Trg Crse in Canada, back in the late 80's. Had somd mouthy kids talking behind my back, yet not realizing I was around the corner ... was very refreshing to hear one of the young instructors, who tore into them, refering to me as one of the best Instructors in the Province.
No one knew I was there, at the time, and I kept it that way ... However, I made sure that opportunities were made available to the young instructor, for his proffessional development.
Loyalty is a trait often overlooked, and I prize it above all others. Not blind loyalty ... True Loyalty.

I once had a team member tell me I didn’t know what I was doing in a business I started from nothing, and was worth millions! I looked at him, and I said, you’re right, write me a check for 30 million dollars, and I will quit!!!

I hired an inlaw as a favor to my late wife. He walked around like he was a boss. The guys on my team were real standup guys who didn't gossip, but they were so fed up with this guys disrespect that they recorded him trying to undermine me. They played the recording in front of him to show him that it wasn't gossip. They told him that I had done more for the crew, including this ungrateful guy, than any other employer had. This guy was so stupid, he thought I couldn't fire him bc he was "family".
I think Dave's employees were at fault for not standing up for him and confronting this woman in front of him. That's what real men do. God bless my guys, wherever they are.

That is the best reason I have working for myself. I always get rid of the bad apples. Impossible get rid of trouble when you are an employee.
