Archer Limb Failure at Olympics 2021

During Olympics games 2021 Finnish archer (Antti Vikström) had (a rare) limb failure. 20 years ago it was a lot more common, now it is a rare event.

I know nothing about archery. I thought it was gonna be his arm that failed.

Not to forget though-at this level of competition, these archers have run THOUSANDS of shots on these limbs. When I was competing, I shot an average of 300 arrows per day 6 days per week. That's 1800 a week and around 7200 a month. Sometimes out in the sun all day and the cold in the mornings. This is why we have two set ups on the line.

The anxiety levels of watching this as a recurve archer go through the roof

The limb fractured almost exactly where I would expect: just past the thickness fadeout where the two wood laminations meet each other. Bending stresses are highest at this point. I've often wondered why most recurve limbs tend to be uniform width along most of their length. Maybe it allows them to manufacture to tighter straightness/symmetry tolerances?

Bad advertising for Hoyt. Limb failure can happen in any bow, but the added and often over inflated price you pay for top name products is supposed to be an assurance of quality. Sadly that is going away, but the prices remain over inflated. The superb quality of the past will retain past customer loyalty though.

As someone with little experience watching archery, it seems pretty unfair that they don't pause the timer whenever something like this happens.

How can someone lose a shot like this? Archery matchplay ought to be like pole vault. If the limb snaps you get awarded another shot with the full 20 seconds restored.

This actually just happened to me today on my 34 pound set of Hoyt Formula Integras. It was only my third time using these limbs and on my first arrow the bottom limb snapped back maybe 6 inches from the bottom.

I believe these are bamboo limbs. I like the feel and performance of bamboo limbs but they're not durable IMO. I've only had one pair of limbs ever to fail on me and they were bamboo limbs.
