If anyone has the very old drill bits you tend to have a decent steel, another fine choice of drill to use is one that is made from a cobalt steel drill

You can also buy the cheapest Chinese hss drill index through your favorite discounter, and produce a full fleet of "oddball" chisels, scribes, and scratchers for next to nothing. Love the idea, I used to just buy Dollar store quarter inches and butcher as needed, but they've gotten rare in anything resembling steel, and worn out drill bits are about as plentiful as palmetto bugs here in Florida, lol.

First rule of grinding is never ever use the side of the stone, it causes them to explode! They should only ever be used on the front edge of the wheel never the side. Good idea for the use of a drill bit though.

I would not have expected the shaft of the drill bit to be hardened like the tip. Even if it was of a good steel.

Great idea. I've used old drill bits for boring bar cutting tool too. Also used a 7mm allen wrench to make a "not so poor man's router plane" (see Paul Sellers).

Nice but some drill bits are soft at that end, might need to anneal, harden, and temper for a good chisel.
