Are there any benefits/disadvantages with using one or the other? I'm new to iOS and iMessage so it's kinda confusing if/when the end result of the message is the same whether you use one or the other.

If this doesn’t work try taking out your SIM card and making sure it’s clean and then put it back in

If it just shows the circle just tap the iCloud to turn it off and then it should auto switch to the number👍🏾

My phone number isn’t showing in. “Start new conversation from” only “you can receive iMessages to and reply from” but it won’t activate 😭

Didn't work for me. I forwarded a web link to myself with option set to send to my phone. It went to my email address instead.

My sister does this, she said she's using her email because she doesn't like giving her number out right away when getting to know someone. Which makes sense.
