They would’ve worked real better imo. Aang looked at her as a mother figure most of the time vs Zuko who saw her as a warrior. Water and fire are opposite but blend well together. Both mature, hardworking, fierce and determined.

It never happened but I think it would have worked out better for them. Aang always came across as infatuated rather than in love and Zukko's girlfriend was in some ways just a female version of him. That wouud not have easily worked. Katara and Zukko complimented each other
