FWIW my first programming contract having to do with trading was commodities.
A fellow hired me to "test his system". _(Did I hear someone snicker? _*_Entirely appropriate!)_* So I designed a lovely interface that allowed him to drag areas of a running graph to harvest data ... this was 1992, Pascal for Win3.1 Work Groups ... so we could apply parameters in was was basically a rules-based expert system and see how those trades would have worked out.
One day he announced that he didn't like the way I had named a certain variable in the code /*blink*/ and so was cancelling the contract /*blink blink*/. I didn't try to collect ... was glad to get out from under him and his fantasies!
