To be fair, both of these knots are designed to have the tension pass THROUGH the knots and continue down the line. As far as this test goes, of course the directional figure-8 wins because it was designed for the load bearing on the loop itself to be parallel to the line while alpine butterfly is designed for perpendicular loads.

I'm interested to see this same test, only with the loops tied on-line rather than the ends.
