The concept of a submarine, a watercraft capable of underwater operation, dates back to ancient times, but it was not until the 17th century that the first practical submarines were built. The credit for inventing the first documented submarine goes to Cornelius Drebbel, a Dutch engineer and inventor. In 1620, he created a wooden, oar-powered submarine called the "Drebbel." It was tested on the River Thames in London and was able to submerge and navigate underwater for a short period.
