Forget criminals, I’m more concerned about coming across Editor Diane in Ireland than an opportunistic criminal.

I have been a solo female traveler in Ireland on numerous occasions and have never once felt unsafe. However, I was scolded by an employee at Connolly train station once for being a bit careless in the way I was carrying my backpack. She was right, someone tried to unzip it. But luckily, nothing was taken.

When I was there last month, I definitely saw drunk teenage kids going from one group to the next in the park and just terrorizing everyone, shouting at them incoherently and trying to pick fights with total strangers. I'd never been so afraid of children in my life. 😂

In the U.S. we call _that_ use of banter, "Patter". You gotta have a good patter if you want to run a game of three card monte. Or recognize it if you want to avoid being shucked.

If someone you’ve never before comes up to you and starts telling you their life sob story, don’t believe them. Also, if they ask you for anything, don’t give it to them.

You know too much about crime in Ireland. You also fled to Spain. Coincidence? 🤔

Appreciate the comments on homelessness in Ireland.

“Free Now” was my transportation choice when I was in Dublin in 2019. Although at the time it was known as “My Taxi”. Dublin has an excellent transportation system but if something takes more than one or two steps to accomplish I’m not comfortable with doing it.

When my wife and I traveled Ireland c.1990, EVERYWHERE we went in the Country, we were told to never leave anything in our rental car. I see it hasn't changed.

I live in Portland Oregon and everything you just said is the exact same thing here. I worked for two years for a homeless shelter and I now can recognize when I am being scammed. And yes I have had my wallet stolen. And it was really super annoying.

Happy Freya's Day Diane! As for pickpocket protection, I always keep my wallet in my front pocket when in questionable surroundings and I'm glad to hear Ireland is a very safe country to visit. Unfortunately most places I've visited the last 35 years around the world when in the Navy and Merchant Marines cannot own up to that stellar safety record.

Please give Chewie a hug and bellyrub and have a great safe weekend. 😊🙏👍✨

The risk of being a victim is just another reason to avoid tourist traps like Temple Bar.

Notice to Americans! Handing over a few 'quarters' to someone on the street is actually you handing out quite a few Euro coins of varying value. I kept ending up with pockets full of coins because I was using bills too often and, well, who knows how much I handed out. Derp.

I managed to end up in a situation where I could have easily been murdered while in Ireland, but instead we just broke into a yacht club, drank beer and I was more hungover the next day.

My last visit to Dublin was exactly 6 years ago. During that visit I never felt unsafe at anytime. Same for Belfast. Both were lovely. My trip was cut short for other reasons so I didn’t get a chance to visit elsewhere in Ireland. I’m hoping to remedy this soon. Great informative video!

I keep thinking of this scene from The Simpsons :

SNAKE: Er, wallet inspector.

(The nerds just give him their wallets.)

SNAKE: I can't believe that worked. (runs off)

HOMER: Hey, that's not the wallet inspector. (goes into deep thought)

Thanks for the tips, Diane.

The tip about groups of teenagers is a good one.

When in Rome on the subway, a group of young teens tried to pickpocket me. I caught them in the act. We reached my stop at that point and they ran away. The travel guide had warned about pickpockets on that line because of the many tourists.

Having your cash, cards, and passport in a safe place is definitely advised.

Not looking like a tourist helps, but sometimes, it's unavoidable.
