A checksum is a string of characters and numbers generated by running a cryptographic hash function against a file. This is used to check or verify whether a file is genuine and/or error-free and that it has not been changed from the original source. The most popular Linux command to create a checksum from a file is the md5sum command. It uses the MD5 message-digest algorithm to produce a 128-bit hash value from the contents of a file.

Every Linux distribution comes with tools for various checksum algorithms. Some of the common command-line checksum tools are as follows:

MD5 checksum tool is called md5sum
SHA-1 checksum tool is called sha1sum
SHA-256 checksum tool is called sha256sum

Hence, after viewing this Linux and Shell Programming Tutorial, students will be familiar with all sorts of the links and checksum concepts used in the Linux platform.
