Lady in the Water (2006) - 'Prologue' scene [1080p]

In any list of terrible films with great scores, you will find this one. James Newton Howard composed some truly beautiful music for this film, but the film is mostly unwatchable. To add insult to injury, the terrific music at the end of the film is also drowned out by sound effects and bad dialogue. So the best sample of music is probably this prologue.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Starring Paul Giamatti, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jeffrey Wright, Bob Balaban, Bill Irwin and David Ogden Stiers as the narrator. Music by James Newton Howard.

To anyone coming back to this. You have a special soul. You appreciate the depth of beauty that most don’t. Cherish that.

Let's be real. The actual reason this movie was so underrated was because humanity really has forgot how to listen.

When I tell people this movie is beautiful and to give it a chance, I tell them don’t watch the trailer, but rather look this up instead.

Water does not resist. Water flows. When you plunge your hand into it, all you feel is a caress. Water is not a solid wall, it will not stop you. But water always goes where it wants to go, and nothing in the end can stand against it. Water is patient. Dripping water wears away a stone. Remember that, my child. Remember you are half water. If you can't go through an obstacle, go around it. Water does.

Personally I think the movie is great. The beauty in it is so subtle, not for everyone.

There's a shared belief between writers that every storyteller creates their own meaning of existence. They look to the stars, sit in the quiet and listen for inspiration to strike. Some hear the voice and write down the vision. Others let it go. I believe M. Night Shyamalan is strongly connected to that world between our reality here on earth and the afterlife. It's in that "Space In Between" where fiction lies, and that is where he got the idea for "Lady in the Water"

Only those intune to their own spirituality and the betterment of society would get this movie. A community helping others really inspires me to keep going. What have we become If we don't help one another on this journey.

2:08 I swear, this reminds me of God always willing to reach out to help man in ways we never thought, yet man forgetting to listen and people shutting him out.

I like the intro…. The narrator’s voice is soothing and yet kind of draws you in. He should do audio books!
I throughly enjoyed this movie, I’d even venture to says it’s in my top 20 favorite movies but “Signs” is my favorite! To each their own but I truly loved “Signs!”

The first time I watched this movie, I interpreted it as Story being sent to help pull Cleveland out of his depression. After watching it probably a hundred times, why am I now just realizing that she's there to prophesize M Night's character, and explain to him how his book is going to change the world?

I come back to this monologue from time to time…just to remind me of my purpose in life. To get a better understanding of what I mean…I am an extreme version of the Cancer zodiac sign…so I’m highly creative, remarkably intuitive and deeply sensitive. It upset me sometimes that people can not SEE the things I see and feel the things I feel. But I can’t blame them…they’ve been programmed and conditioned differently. They hear to judge but they don’t hear to understand. That’s so disappointing to me.

This is straight up Dogon cosmology and nobody gets it.
Man really did forget to listen...

Someone was definitely watching Fern Gully, because this intro is almost identical.

In the prologue Night identifies ownership as something that moves us as a species away from purpose and transcendence. Later in the movie he himself plays a character destined to author a radical manifesto of great importance. I wonder if some of these political ideas were part of the problem with Disney. 2006 was still very much the Reagan era, the time before neoliberalism lost credibility. Maybe this movie should have been made in 2022 instead, as we now see private ownership really bringing on the apocalypse, like really obviously.
