China was never really closer to the Philippines than to Indonesia.
China just humored ex-president Duterte.
And centuries ago, China-Indonesia trade exchanges were greater than China- Philippines Trade exchanges.
The China- Philippines Trade hugely favors China. The Philippines suffers a 17B trade deficit to China because China restricts the entry of many Philippine products while the Philippines accepts all kinds of Chinese products.
In 2023, the Philippines, while having an acrimonious dispute with China over the SCS, became the fastest growing economy in the ASEAN+3 countries.
Evidently, the Philippines is doing better despite it standing up against China's thuggery and thievery.

I personally know Indonesia's president, Jokowi, and advised him already, while still major of Solo, his home town in Central Java, to befriend China. The two countries are both multi ethnic and multi religious with a multitude of languages and cultures as well as a common language and clear cultural common ground.
