From a Marxist pov, Castro was not a communist but rather the representative of the national bourgeoisie. While Cuban revolution was certainly progressive, it was led by the national bourgeoisie and after Cuba was liberated they pursued their class interests which did not aline with the interests of the Cuban proletariat or socialism. Cuba never really industrialised and is still largely agrarian with a large tourism sector. Not to mention collaboration with Soviet social imperialism, and the resulting dependence on the USSR. The Cuban army was basically served as Soviet mercenaries in the Horn of Africa to aid the fascist Derg regime against the national liberation struggles in Western Somalia and Eritrea. At best Cuba is a social democracy, not a socialist state.
