Do you think the Banished Knights have some relation to the Hornsent?

Something I saw in another video (I forget which one) is that Gaius’s arena is full of the bodies/armor of the banished knights, as if they were rounded up and slaughtered

I believe the Banished Knights originate from Stormveil, as a Divine Bird Knight may have been the Stormlord we've all be searching for since the game's release. It would explain why they wield the elements of the hornsent, have reverence for horns, and why they were banished to begin with.

There's also banished knight armor littered in Gaius's arena. Considering just how widespread their gear is, it makes it questionable just how old the faction really is, and who they were prior to the whole "banished" title. They may actually predate the Erdtree.

I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there actually is Ancient Dragon iconography in the embossing on the breastplate of the Banished Knight armour (Two Dragons facing each other).
Also the Commander armour has Draconic motifs on the knee, elbow, and shoulder guards that are strikingly similar to the Drake Knight set.

I can still see dragon motif in the commander armour.

Great observation, the item description reads “…whether by misfortune or misdeed, were forced to abandon their homes. These fierce warriors were each and all accomplished. Perhaps that is why, despite their territorial losses, they were still named knights.”

This could allude to Messmer’s crusade who abandoned their homes after the territorial loses and defeat of the hornsent

There’s so many designs like this throughout the base game that, after coming back from the DLC, makes you go “OOOH OF COURSE!” Even something as simple as horns in a design is now totally recontextualized, love that sm 🙏

My thought is the banished knights were probably the humans who sided with the hornsent when marika decided to genocide them. Given the armor’s item description and following this logic, they may have fought the golden army before marika uprooted the lands of shadow. Now metaphorically and literally banished from the land they were fighting for… also, it would seem that placi’s influence can extend beyond the boundary that marika set up to divide the lands, this may have been how the dragon communion cult still thrived for a time in the lands between and in the shadow lands as the dragons could commune with placi and relay his will to the remaining banished knights and eventually this developed the dragon cult in lyndell

In the 1.0 version of the game it says that the horns on their armors are "patterned after that of a dragon", but the similiarities with the Hornsent are fascinating nontheless 🤔

Niall and O’Neil are also Irish names which matches Hornsent’s accent in the DLC which is also Irish. The etymology of those names is interesting with Niall apparently meaning “champion” and O’Neil deriving from the Gaelic for “descendant of Niall”.

The commanders do have the thorns of Godwyn on their chest tho

I always assumed they were of the storm lord (which is a bird) considering they use storm magic and are found at the abandoned storm veil castle, and later served dragons and are found by dragon communion chapels and farrum azula

There’s also a thorns motif on the front of Commander O’Neil’s armor set, as well as the horns. Just noticed that. And it’s in kind of in the shape of a spiral.

Commander Niall's Horns are of the same as the bull goat armor horns and even share a named texture. Bullgoat horns are highly sought after for armor qualities.

Your voice, combined with Rome Total war soundtrack (if it's not from there, it reeeeally is alike) is an awesome fit.

There's so much connection to the Hornsent and Farum Azula because the God (aka Queen) of the Hornsent was Placidusax's wife.
The former bearer of the Elden Ring. (Which is what makes him an Elden Lord.)
The creator of the Gates of Divinity.
Who ruled the world through the power of Destined Death (which is why Hornsent culture is based in death).
I of course speak of The Gloameyed Queen.

This is why her children, The Godskin Duo, are fought in The Dragon Temple of Farum Azula... As well as why Farum Azula shares the architecture and rampant drapery of Enir Elim.
As well as why you can find Verdigris panels in the style of Rauh in the walls of Farum Azula too.
Oh and it's why the second Lion Dancers have a deathblight phase.
