Having originated in Japan, they are fairly common antagonists in Japanese media, showing up rather often in anime. funny how every culture back then basically each has their own version of the kraken. makes you think if some giant ship eating squid actually existed back then

the funny thing is one description of Umi-Bosu is a big creature coming out of the water to ask for a bucket to sink your ship, to prevent him from sinking it you give him a bucket with a hole in it so he can't get water in it to pour on your deck. XD

i thought people in the past already believed that there are monsters in the sea that are way worse then the umibozu like the
icelandic evil whales illhveli or the greek Scylla and Charybdis so i don't think it would have discouraged sea travel that much
