Start of a new series exploring historic areas hidden around the state of Pennsylvania. If you know of a little known, hidden location, please send it my way.
The Harrisburg State Hospital was created as the Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital and Union Asylum for the Insane in 1845.
Between 1893 and 1912, the campus was rebuilt following the "Cottage Plan."
The movie, Girl Interrupted was filmed here in 1999. Some signs were left after the filming and are still there today.
The Hospital closed on January 27, 2006.

Love this place. I have wandered around it a little myself. It gets pretty creepy at night. I wanted to do an overnight ghost hunt in one of the buildings, but thankfully, i couldn't get the right approval. Im sure that would have been a very long night. The little cottages are pretty cool too. Thanks for the quick video on this often overlooked place. If those walls could only talk.

I have Girl Interrupted! One of the houses in the movie was filmed in Bellevue Park. My mom’s friend’s house was in the shot where Winona Ryder was getting into the car to go to Claymoore.

You see those japanese larch trees around the seating area of those steps? A lot were brought in. Extremely rare. All the trees are marked and recorded.

I remember visiting my grandpa when he was a patient there back in the 80s.

I've always been interested in the state hospital. I would love to watch a deep dive into it's history from you.

I have stood exactly where this was filmed, and toured the entire facility, including the tunnels below. Such a fascinating place. I've heard it is now closed to the public completely, due to vandalism.

Did you ever do a survey of the prison in Mount Grenta? The ruins are still there.

Dad they are demolishing the place. It’s a piece of history and very beautiful part of Harrisburg history.

Several buildings demolished, remaining being used by the Commonwealth of PA. for state offices, research, etc.
