Reminds me of a short story I wrote awhile ago. It had everyone living in a VR space permanently, but every so often someone had to be pulled out to do maintenance on the physical world. The virtual world was so "real" that people forgot that there used to be a physical one, so when the person was selected for maintenance duty, they would simply disappear for years at a time with no explanation.

We are already going this direction. I know people that spend most of their lives in the internet. Some have only relationships through the internet. VR is just one more step, the chip that Elon wants to put into people's head is the stuff that will disconnect a lot of people from reality.

This is so dystopian, but I want to emphasize once more that although we know it's bad, THE TENSION IS STILL THERE as Toby explained it. Just like the first video by LBS on the Metaverse, if we don't make life better in the real world, people will want to move to the digital one.

This just reminds me of a thought I've had a long time ago. About how technology can be so advanced that to certain observers, it can appear as magic. I've lived long enough to remember what the world was like without computers or cellphones. To someone from a few centuries ago, someone having a conversation on a shiny sleek smartphone would be witchcraft as it would look like astral projection.
