Today I compare two large diaphragm dynamic mics, the Electro Voice RE-320 & the Rode Procaster to see which one is best. I was so torn between these mics, but I think either will be a GREAT option for your podcast or gaming videos.

Depends on your voice. I have both and I prefer the RE320. I did my own vs video and for a female voice the Procaster sounded nicer.

I don't really like either... haha. I think the RE-320 made your voice sound bright and it's easy to hear the harsh effect. The Procaster sounded smoother/softer but dull in comparison. So I can see why it was hard to choose!

After a week of agonizing I finally pulled the trigger on the RE - 320. My choices really boiled down to the Rode Procaster, the Heil PR40, and the RE-320. I found the RE-320 at a package price that included the boom arm and shock mount for $329. That made its price about equivalent or even a bit lower than the Procaster. Truth is I also did have a slight preference for the EV-320. Then it came down to the Heil PR40 vs the EV-320, and it was the same kind of choice. Here, I felt that I would have been just as happy with either the PR40 of EV-320, but the price of the EV-320 was better when I added the cost of the boom arm and shock mount. I also, felt that the PR40 would need a cloudlifter, and I’ve been persuaded that I probably won’t need the cloudlifter with the EV-320. Honestly, I don’t think any of them would have been a bad choice.

Both sound pretty nice, but the procaster picked up some plosives. In my headphones the 320 was a clear winner, not harsh, sounded more refined.

I think the re320 sounds better with deep voices. I watched another review with a guy that had a deep voice and I picked the 320. In this review I agree with you. Both mics are awesome and can’t go wrong. I guess it doesn’t hurt that the rode saves you 70 bucks too!

Though I had a pre-disposition to the Electro Voice, I knew before you voiced your conclusions that I liked the Rode mic just a bit more. I'd trade my Blue Yeti in a minute for either of them.

OMG this was the best video ever! A few months back I was COMPLETELY torn between these two mics and ended up going with the Procaster. You sir...have made my day.

It is amazing how much of a difference that 30 hz on the low end really makes. To me the Procaster always sounds like you are under a blanket or something, except you still get all the plosives. The 320 sound a bit fuller, and I feel like the plosives aren't as bad. I feel like if they made a version of the RE 320 without the kickdrum switch to make it more simple and cheap, that would be the perfect balance of the two, since the most compelling aspects of the Procaster are it's simplicity and price.

Your videos sound so crisped and clear without no white noise at all

Great video! Very helpful. I thought the RE320 sounded better, especially with the guitars. But you were right, the background noise reduction might have been better with the Rode.

I have both mics and I like the RE320 better. I like both but the Procaster has a bit too much low end for my voice but that can be changed because I have the DBX 286S. The Procaster is really bad on plosives compared to the RE320.

I have the RE320 with a custom pop-filter, and I also have the SHURE MVi on the "talk" settings for EQ, compression, and some background noise elimination. I also have the Cloudlifter for some extra gain, so I can be a distance from it in a video. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Personally would have picked the RE320, But that's different from Voice to Voice. But why don't you compare all of These Broadcast microphones in one Video? That would be so cool!

For your voice privateer was good, in most cases I like the re 320

My first inclination was that the RE-320 sounded better for spoken word, but the longer I listened the more I preferred the Procaster. That extra sparkle on the RE-320 does give a better first impression but I think the harshness you mentioned would make it grating over the course of a 2-hour podcast or a 12-hour audiobook or the like.

The RE320 sound more open and fuller sounded. Good video. Review the Lauten Audio LS-208

I agree the Procaster is a better Mic; the brightness of the RE320 was harsh almost to the point of clipping.  I feel the fact it was demo'd first put quite a few of the people here off the Procaster, which naturally sounded much duller.  I also don't feel the levels were set well, which resulted in the Fletcher-Munson curve effect portraying the Procaster poorly.

I own one myself and it is an amazing mic, especially for the price.  I understand why you chose it as the winner, but why many of your viewers wouldn't understand why from this video.

I find it easier to add than to subtract while equing, so I prefer the Rode myself. It's also nice that you get the shockmount and windscreen and still be cheaper than the EV.

Great comparison, good choices and well done! That harshness in the RE320 is effectively reduced by using a foam windscreen (the official EV one, not a sweatsock). The foam cover makes it look less cool, but it sounds better :^), I think, and helps with the background noise. For that matter I've seen you use a foam windscreen with the Procaster. But I understand why it makes sense to compare them without the windscreens. Another excellent video.
