I still don’t understand why we subtract the distance from home from the difference from school

I think what it’s trying to say is that we don’t restart the whole scenario we keep the points of how much we traveled. What I mean is, given the distance from home to school is 10 miles and our constant rate being 6 miles per 100 minutes. If we were to start at the school and make our way towards the home that would represent (rate times # of time). Let’s say we walked for 100 minutes giving us about 6 miles. So we know that’s right because when we plug it in our distance from school to that point is 6 miles. However when we’re finding the distance from home we’re now at home and finding the distance of (6 miles from school) well if (6 miles from school) is closer to home we don’t have to walk a total of 10 miles instead we can walk less due to it being closer to us. Knowing this if we look at our point of 6 miles from school we can see that, that point from home is only a 4 mile walk. This can be expressed by 10 (the whole distance from home to school) subtracted by the point we marked when we walked for 100 minutes. Which is 6 miles 10-6 = 4 meaning from home to that point we would only have to walk 4 miles

I think they defined the distance from home to school by 'd'. But the value is already given, which is 1.4 miles. But the value of 'd' eventually turns 0. I mean If I multiple the rate with the whole time, I will get the distance. And then if I substrate it from the whole distance, it turns 0.
The question is the most confused question ever till now.😖😖😖

Hello! I'm just confused on why you choose to multiply the denominator and the numerator by 10? Can I multiply the numerator and the denominator by any number I wish?
