I can't disagree with anything you've said, but there's a magpie in all of us. Who doesn't like shiny new things?

Hi Simon,
I always enjoy your videos but I reckon I am more of a fan of cavity backs than you are. You see them as something beginners use for a short period as they progress.
As a young man you are forgetting that as golfers age they lose length, maybe don't play as much and a move to cavity backs can be a godsend!
I played to a handicap of 5 when I was a kid, I got tiny blades like all the other guys and enjoyed them . Last year I got a set of Wilson d7s and those cavity backs have really helped me. Now I am nearly 60 I can't hit blades far enough or well enough. I use Cleveland wedges round the greens but apart from that I have no wish to change from my game improvement irons and I reckon I'm not on my own.
Best wishes on the house move, keep up your excellent channel.
Garry

I’m in me 60 now and done exactly what you said, let’s hope the bit about 10/20/30 year left to play is right to

I'm a + handicap and I simply love these videos. I have a buddy that is about a 7 and every year he get the new game cavity back irons. I tell him every year save YOUR MONEY! He could watch this video get all the info, and still blow his money...

I still like watching though. Keep it up.

Eh.. agree in the sense that you should always buy cavity backs used (as they’re significantly cheaper like you said), but I wouldn’t say that all club brands just “re-badge” their cavity backs. Completely agree that Taylormade and Callaway do (they’re essentially marketing brands at this point) however Cobra, for instance, has made drastic improvements with their cavity backs since the F6 (at least shape and technology wise). But overall, a very useful viewpoint to consider👍🏼

Yeah for real. Burner 3.0 have done me well for a decade, now I’m 7 handicap. Getting some new to me mizuno irons finally.

I bought my cavity back lefty Cobra SZ irons in 2009 for £200. I've never been any good at golf and I haven't played for at least 6 years. Now I'm trying to get back to it, I'm shocked at the price of all the modern stuff and don't see a lot of difference. Honestly, they may be 12 years old, but I'm definitely sticking with what I have.

my first iron upgrade i just made was from old 90s style muscle back iron set to some forgiving and long callaway x2 hot irons from like 2014 second hand.. i think they were a good choice but they definately havent magically taught me how to hit an iron like a pro..

This comment is my longest, most forgiving set of words I've ever produced. It has more syllables than nearly every other comment seen in the comments section and this year i've added 50% more punctuation for extra p-factor! Golf club marketing is the biggest scandal ever... you speak the truth sir.

Simon I love that you showed the RSi1...I bought these for $300 2 years ago and I absolutely love them! I haven't had an issue with the speed slots cracking, but have me worried though..CHEERS!!

Really good advise, i've referred my new golfing mates to your channel for this kind of advise. Recently had a hit of some old taylormade burner cavity irons and couldn't believe how easy they were to hit and the height was ridiculous! No doubt they would keep up with the sim2 irons of this year

Well said and very timely. Bought my Ladies Cobra Baffler Blades (cavity backs, not perimeter weighted) as used clubs in 1990, and am returning to the game after a 20 year break. Today, there is more choice for seniors (ladies and gents) with slower swing speeds! I have a group of 33+/- degree used irons (from eBay) with shafts ranging from a UST Mamiya recoil ES 760/ F2 (senior flex) to a DST Xxio MP900 41 g (L flex) to a Fujikura Orochi 50 g LL flex. Most (but not all) are perimeter weighted. I am going to have a lot of fun "testing" these clubs on the range. Last time I chose "pretty". This time it will be "performance", and a pretty bag.

Hey Simon, you hit it on the nail Mate. I got pulled into the cavity back (Callaway mavrik Max ) market but have now switched over to Forged irons . I now play Mizuno JPX 850 forge and Callaway Apex 19 forged and have found a huge difference 👍🥃🇨🇦

I thought exactly that, so I wenet to my golfshop on my local golf course and tried out A LOT of cavity backs. Newer and older ones. And the one that was by far the best for me after months (yes, months!) of testing, was the new T300 model, which bothered me a lot since I did this primarily to prove to myself that there is no difference. So well, I ended up with those

Had Rsi1 for 7 years . Great clubs!! Face slots fell out still performed well until last weekend when head snapped off my 8 iron!! Shaft was totally rusted !
Just bought mavrik irons and WOW massive difference in distances .. mental lofts!...kept rsi PW in bag as a gap wedge!!

Been playing with Rsi1 irons for a good few years now but with graphite shafts. In my sixties and a 14 handicap I love them.

I think you've just saved me £700 Simon!

I have a 2008 set of TM RAC HT 3-SW that I hit really well, I play off 16. I did try a set of G425s on a launch monitor and there was zero difference in distance, and I actually thought the Pings were slightly more difficult to hit out of the middle.

I'm going to spend £80 regripping my RAC's, it's made me appreciate them more watching this video!

This is 100% true. I bought some Callaway XR-OS irons about 2 years ago when i started. I got them pre owned and could probably sell them for around what I paid, but the main difference I can see is the shaft. I just got fit by Sub 70 (a great direct to consumer brand) and went from 85g R-flex shafts to 120g KBS tour stiff shafts and the 699 pro’s, their equivalent to a P770 or Apex Pro. The only silver lining to this is that my dad gets my hand me down clubs, and might play more with me.
