The coventry carol takes on a new meaning for me since mid 2021 all cause mortality figures rising with children and young people having an unprecendented death rate including babies having heart attacks in the womb. The fact that this is titled "A Winter's Night" rather than "Sting's Christmas Extravaganza" reminds us that the holiday many celebrate on December 25 (and the season that surrounds it) has at least as much to do with various ancient pagan solstice celebrations as it has to do with the holiday that came to be called "Christmas." This is a beautiful and fitting tribute to the quiet stillness of winter; and a welcome contrast to the commercial noise that has ufortuately come to characterize that season.
