The 5 things are...
1 - Using the F barre chord in real songs 0:43

2 - Placing all fingers of a chord down at the same time (not 1 finger at a time) 1:54

3 - Learning chord based songs quickly 3:19

4 - Working out strumming patterns by ear

I love this guy. He's so humble and that's necessary to teach beginners. Imagine being a cocky guitarist and teaching a beginner... disaster.

I'm nervously watching through hoping I'm intermediate now, and I'm definitely there according to these standards. I was waiting for alternate and/or fingerpicking, soloing and scales/arpeggios, note picking, complex cords... Actually a lot I'm proud to know I have knowledge of. So I'm gonna do something rare and pat myself on the back, because ten months ago I was watching your 'very first beginners lessons' and you e minor pentatonic videos and barely understanding. Now it's way behind me and I'm working on intermediate to advanced aspects of the guitar and loving it. It's very worth it so if you're struggling I promise you'll get it, and be happy you did. Thanks Andy! Peace from Philly!

I learned my first fingerstyle song before I mastered the F.

Why do people keep saying master thr F chord?? the B chord is much harder.

My list of signs you are an advanced player:
1. Playing any chord or inversion anywhere you want, with or without extensions. (Fretboard and theory knowledge)
2. Knowing your scales when you hear them.
3. You love practising scales, and the things you do on a guitar sound beautiful to you.
4. You have no problem figuring out things by ear.
5. You can come up with an improvised song on spot with no preparation.
6. You are consistent with practice.

Terrific video Andy! You have described me to a tee. I have been playing guitar for about 14 months & am still very much a beginner. Starting later in life (at 68) does not help matters. Since I am retired, I usually play for 1 to 2 hrs. per day. Still can't play bar chords in songs & have trouble with them in general. Just starting to get the hang of playing tunes & keeping the strumming going. Changing chords quickly is still a problem as well.
It is really hard to get to the next level but I keep a positive attitude & keep trying. The "rule of thumb" is that it takes around 10, 000 hrs. to know how to play an instrument well. I am hoping that I can learn guitar much sooner than that. Anyway, your lessons have been a big help to me & your advice is always right on! Thanks you mate, Steve

I've been playing for 15 years and I can finally consider myself as an advanced beginner player 👐🏽

Andy,

I have spent perhaps 3-5 hours researching different guitar teachers on the Internet to determine if I am an intermediate guitarist after 8 months of playing guitar 2+ hours every day. The answer is "no". I am an advanced beginner.

But this video of yours was very important, helpful. In my own mind I have summarized your five key points as FSNSN.

1. F chord. Learn to play the F chord by itself and in songs. Playing the F chord in a song is the objective.
2. Simultaneous. Learn or strive to play your chords simultaneously with your fingers.
3. New songs. Can you learn new songs quickly and play them.
4. Strumming. Determine strums by hearing them. (And yes, studying your strumming course currently.)
5. Notes. Learn the notes at least on the two lower strings.

I would add one more determinant of being an intermediate guitarist: Read sheet music and play songs with others. This encompasses all of your 5 points.

I'm lucky to live in Chicago, IL USA where the Old Town School of Folk Music has Wednesday jam sessions for 2 hours, for free. Amazing. Last week I jumped into their jam session and was the weakest guitar player among 15 guitarists, ukelele players, harmonica players, etc.

Thanks again Andy. I intend on taking all the courses you recommended in this video. First, I need to finish strumming.

Best Wishes and Thanks for the Great Video,

Richard

I only have two fingers so becoming intermediate is tricky

I've been playing for about 6 1/2 months, now, and I can get the F chord to ring out pretty clearly most of the time. The B chord is the one that gives me the most trouble. I find it difficult holding the A shape while stretching my index finger to create the barre. I haven't quite figured out the trick to that, yet.

I find that motivation and avoiding bad habits are hurdles when teaching mates the basics. I find that if you can introduce them to a simple concept/style/progression etc that allows them to see the possibilities ahead if they keep at it can help avoid ending up on that platu of half muted cowboy chords and resentment that leads to repetitive "repetitive camp fire guitar guy" syndrome. The basic pentatonic shape that can be played under the E bar shape and one step up from the A shape to create Hendrix/Fruchanti style licks between changes is a good way to turn the guitar into crack for beginners. If they grasp that concept and make it there with a good posture and technique foundation, they have the tools to explore and minor chords etc fall into place... Hendrix tricks like using the first finger for barring the back of an A bar shape allowing you to embellish with the third,  or just funk shit up! really makes the freeboard open up too. All the sudden somebody who had nothing but cowboy chords and two bar shapes in their toolbox last week,  is embellishing over Hey Joe or Under the bridge this week and the possibility's look endless to them.

I am so excited to have found you Andy. I learnt to play guitar as a child but didn't touch a guitar for over 4 decades. I am now feeling so enthusiastic to learn again and your beginners channel has made a great difference to my learning and motivation! Hurray .

I saw this as a beginner 1-1.5 years ago.
I'm seeing it now again.
Good to know I'm intermediate according to Andy guitar!
