"I dont consider myself a chess genius"

- Also Bobby Fischer

Fischer’s actually being very honest here. I mean he obviously struggled with pride issues, but he’s not saying Morphy “wasn’t that good, ” or “Morphy was only ‘good, ’ because the guys he played weren’t that good.” Like what a lot of top GM’s say today. He’s saying Morphy didn’t have the modern chess theory we have today. He’s also not saying Morphy couldn’t understand modern theory if he lived today. Implying had Morphy lived today, and had the modern theory we have today, he would be one of the top players, because of Morphy’s *talent*.

Bobby was able to take down the entirety of the USSR while he had only his notes and a few chess books and broke records with straight wins in highly competitive play in such a dominate way which has never been replicated even till this day.

Garry was a unyielding champion for 15 years before machines would take over. He’s faced top players from the old and new era while still remaining on top and is still able to go toe to toe at the age of 60 with the best chess has to offer AFTER retirement.

Magnus is a step ahead of the most competitive players in the modern era thanks to machines and has unified several titles to grant him the title of the best in the modern era. His dominance is legendary along with his memory of remembering a game exactly which happened a decade ago.

These three all have strong cases of being the all time best depending on what factor you’re looking at.

He's actually saying Morphy and Capablanca are in the same class as him.

Fun fact: fisher and morphy both quit playing chess because of how boring it became for them

An "insane" man can still spit facts. This might be controversial but in my opinion, I think theory ruins chess, chess has become a more of a memory test than anything else.

You have to love him.

- Am I the most talented player? That is something else
+ Are you te most talented player?
- Well... I think so

This is also now true of Bobby Fischer.
Today's players have computer analysis available to them, which Fischer didn't have when he was playing. He did his analysis using a chess set and a book.
They also often have a whole team of people helping them too, which wasnt really a thing back in Fischer's time.

He’s right the next best player will always have the advantage over the last because they know everything they do then add to it obviously this is easier said than done you basically have to be a genius

That seems to happen to a lot of people. Even Magnus no longer wants to compete in the candidates and other classical chess tournaments.

It's simply not interesting to him because of the amount of preparation it takes to memorize so many more lines that you think your opponents will use.

Magnus knows he's better than these players unless they happen to have enough memorize lines to beat him.

He knows that if he can get them into novel situations and they have to actually "play chess", they will lose.

Hence why he'd rather play random or with low time contols.

They were both the best of their eras.
It is impossible to compare..
It’s like comparing sportsman from different eras, , it’s simply an exercise in futility..

Why is his opinion on himself bad, if he demonstrates a bit, ( under speaking) bobby is a goat. But the names are equal in potential talent. His quote is super accurate

Can't argue with that at all, fischer knows what he's talking about even if he was a bit nuts.

Fischer is completely correct about this. By “theory, ” he means book learning and analysis. Memorization.

Hard to say, would Morphy care to learn all that material or even be able to compared to the highest rated GMS of today? Being said, if all those GMs since were back with Morphy without their books and AI Morphy would crush them.

Same applies still to more modern players compared to bobby its just how life goes it's. Because of previous greats that modern greats can be greater

Every new generation stands on the shoulders of giants. That's why the current cream of the crop are never the GOAT imo, whether its Messi or Carlsen or whoever.
