35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm - Which is BEST for Portrait Photography?

In this video I compare three popular focal lengths - 35mm vs 50mm vs 85mm - to find out which of these is the best for capturing portraits.

With so many focal lengths to choose from, it can be difficult to know exactly which lens you should choose. Well, in this video, I aim to shed some light on this problem and show you some of the pros and cons for each of these focal lengths.

Within this video, I'll be shooting with my Sony A7III, Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN, Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM, and Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN.

awesome comparison tom! I love how 35mm makes the photos more 3d ! I would use the 35mm for full body shots, 50mm for waist up, and 85mm for close up portraits! but again depends on the situation! cheers!

Thanks for this informative video. I have the Sigma 50mm ART 1.4 but also the Tamron 90mm 2.8 Macro. For the latter is it practical to use as an 85mm on a full frame camera for portraits?

Personally, I don't care for the 50mm focal length. I use 35, 85, and 135 for portraits.

Great video!! One clarification, the 'compression' has nothing to do with the lens, it's 100% the result of DISTANCE from the subject. But since you can get a cropped in framing from further away with longer focal lengths, you get the illusion that it's the result of the lens itself. It's not.

and this is why 70mm primes should exist, 35mm, too much distortion, 50mm, less distortion but still not that ideal, and 85mm is too restrictive, sony please make a 70mm 1.4 gm!
