The Secret History - Underground Dungeons, Murder, Demonic Visions and the Death of the Roman Empire

Perhaps the most explosive insider historical account of significance ever written, Procopius' "The Secret History" claims to voice the untold story of the latter stages of Eastern Rome and it's swift degeneration, specifically under Justinian and Theodora.

This respected scholar and historian was no enemy of the Emperor and Empress - at least at the outset - and in fact was chosen by them to be the leading Byzantine court historian. He subsequently became the man responsible for documenting the Gothic wars, spearheaded by Eastern Rome's most famous and capable general of the day, Belisarius.

So explosive was the work, and so extreme were certain claims, that the entire work has been largely ignored - a serious mistake and injustice, in my view.

This video is a tribute to Procopius, his work, and all similar important histories quietly shuffled away or proactively hidden. One can't help but notice countless parallels with the collapse of Rome and our own degenerate, prideful, ignorant and forgetful age, and important related lessons.. let's not turn our heads.

At the conclusion of the series on the Goths, I'd mentioned 'The Secret History' - it's importance, and my desire to somehow cover it exclusively in the future. I finally felt compelled enough to gather my notes together to proceed and do just that.

I decided to not make this an official 'subverted history' installment after all, considering it doesn't quite cover a broad expanse of time and topics, but has a much more narrow and specific focus. In a sense, it's almost a powerful supplemental, in my mind, to the three-part Gothic series.. even if it does have significant standalone value as an account of the latter stages of Eastern Rome.

Regardless, it's an astonishing account, and profoundly important... and, as yet, still virtually unknown. It shouldn't be.

There is *much* more to say on the issue of ancient Persia, the Medes, 'usurper' rulers and genuine strangeness regarding this time period - strangeness that continues to this day, with regard to Wikipedia, and the modern histories written - and certainly much more to say on the Khazars.

In his book, The Great Reset, Klaus Schwab specifically mentions the Plague of Justinian on p. 13. I seem to remember bumping into a similar reference in an another similar source - perhaps an MIT Technology Review article, but I'm not certain. Schwab's reference is enough to give one pause.

All the “history” docs and videos I’ve seen regarding Justinian made him out to be “The Last Roman” who was honorable, just and pious. They dismissed the Secret History as Catholic propaganda to demean the Orthodox East. But after watching this video and conducting my own research, Precopius WAS the true author of the Secret History, and is our best source for the time. I’m very interested to see how such a book managed to escape Byzantium and found itself within the vaults of the Vatican.

What Procopius says about Theodora is really nasty. Imagine the worst and most narcissistic 21st century OF ethot but give her absolute power over the law and the land.

What if Procopius wrote this work as a “buffer” for his life in case Justinian was overpowered and a coup took over (which did nearly happen)? He writes so much about the emperors accomplishments and then there’s one book that says the complete opposite. I would argue he had the “secret history” in his back pocket in case Justinian was overthrown and his historian was about to have his head on the chopping block.
