Myositis Ossificans
The 'Myositis ossificans'ย is an aberrant reparative process that represents formation of benignย heterotopic ossificationย inย skeletal muscle. Term Heterotopic Ossification is used for extra ossious bone formation in soft tissues.
Myositisย is misnomer as it is not a primary inflammatory pathophysiologic process of muscle. Predisposing factorsย includes - traumatic injury such as muscleย contusion, burns, neurologic insults with head injuries, long term immobilization like paraplegia and extensive surgery.
Clinically,ย patient with myositis ossificans presents with a painful/painless, palpable soft tissue mass that may be confused to be a neoplastic or inflammatory conditions. If mass is exdending upto the joint then it is bound to restrict the range of motion of particular joint.
Case History:
67 year male patient had history of head injury 2 year back and patient went into coma. Patient was bedridden for almost 8 months follwing which he was started with passive mobilization. Patient was also given massage which the relatives thought could be helpful. Since then patient had consulted many doctors with the complaints of not being able to walk.
Diagnosis :
Extensive myositis ossificans (or Heterotopic ossification) with extra-articular ankylosis of the hip jointย secondary to traumatic brain injury.
