Pritam Singh, Chan Chun Sing spar on impartiality of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee

Education Minister Chan Chun Sing clarified that civil servants on the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee are not politically affiliated with any political party in Singapore, in response to Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh on Aug 7 in Parliament.

For almost two hours in Aug 7’s Parliament session, four opposition MPs traded barbs with Minister Chan over whether Singapore’s electoral boundaries review process is fair and transparent and needed change.

I would humbly suggest carving EBRC out of ELD and make EBRC report directly to the President, because although the President also contests in PE, the President is not affected by any boundary changes, and therefore will not have to deal with any potential conflict of interest arising. This would also effectively solve Minister Chan's concerns of horse-trading, because when EBRC is in the hands of the President, politicians can't possibly engage in any inter-party horse-trading at all.

"Trust our Civil Servants? Well we have someone at the top of our Civil Service who thought that cotton comes from sheep! So yes trust our civil servants but always verify. Who are the civil servants involved ? The EBRC reports to the PM and therefore has a conflict of interest. How does the public have confidence that those civil servants involved are truly independent? Will it be disclosed to the public who these civil servants are ? So that their background can be vetted by the public. Even if they are independent how would the public know if they will not succumb to pressure by their politically elected bosses.

Sg people know whether is there gerrymandering when the Braddell ward is part of the Marine Parade GRC. Not surprised if one day someone deemed fit to place siglap ward as part of the Jurong GRC.
