How Long Should My Sermon Be?

When preparing your sermon, one of the first questions to ask is simply, “How long should it be?” Sometimes the length depends on your audience or host. At other times, it is your decision to make.

I do wish to caution you—think not only about how long your sermon is, but also how long it feels to the audience.

Study audience context to determine what length might be appropriate for sermons. Make sure you are aligned with your host’s expectations. If you are preaching regulary to one congregation, you can actually train them to listen to longer sermons!
