The first Genesis album I ever listened to was A Trick of the Tail.
Way back in 1977 when I was 14, I’d already gotten into Yes, ELP, Zep, Floyd, Crimson & Purple but was completely unaware of Genesis until a mate at school suggested I might like them and advised me to get Trick and Selling England by the Pound to start my journey. Trick went on the turntable first (cos I liked the gatefold album cover) and that was it - my lifelong love of Genesis began! The opening track (Volcano) simply blew me away! The sheer power of the song and then that fantastically tricksy instrumental bit at the end!
And then I heard Entangled…
I’d never heard guitars played like this before 😮 It was only later that I found out they were 12-strings (2 or 3 of them together!) which I knew nothing about.
It just melted my heart and then… the instrumental ending!!
Again, at that time I had no idea about ARP synths, Mellotrons or Moog Taurus Bass Pedals.
But the sound was glorious, no other word for it!!
To be honest, I was fortunate that I had a vinyl pressing of Trick that a HiFi shop later told me (when I went through my ‘quality HiFi phase’ a few years later; I used Trick and Rush’s Moving Pictures as my reference discs) was the best they’d ever heard.
But the immense joy I felt on listening to that whole album, and especially Entangled, has remained with me for all the 45 years since.
Entangled is still one of my favourite 3 or 4 Genesis tracks ever and I’ve finally gotten around to trying to transcribe it! Yes, I had a stab at a rough transcription back in the day but never really got it to sound like the original; until now (hopefully…)
The problem was trying to make two (sometimes three) 12-string guitars and one acoustic guitar sound right as a solo piano piece. NOT easy, let me tell you!
I couldn’t just pile the individual guitar lines on top of one another; it was impossible to play and didn’t sound that good anyway. So I had to choose what I felt were the most important notes from the various guitar parts.
But after a LOT of analysis of all the arpeggiated guitar lines, I think I’ve come up with something I’m prepared to share.
The original audio parts that I’ve used are, as usual, from the 2007 5.1 DVD mixes.
As well as all the vocal parts, you’ll also hear other original sounds like the tinkly celeste (or glockenspiel?) and the Mellotron strings fade in/out plus, of course, the above mentioned outro instrumental sounds. But NO guitars (replaced by my piano part).
How’d I manage that?! By good fortune really, I noticed that not only did the rear (surround) left & right channels have exactly the same guitar parts as the front L & R channels but they also didn’t contain the other instrumentation that the front channels had.
So I simply phase-inverted the rear channels, adjusted their levels slightly and hey-presto; no guitars! 😀
I decided to keep the original synth/choir/pedals sounds of the instrumental outro in the video along with my piano simply because they’re just awesome! Of course, I had to swamp the choir (and consequently the synth) in reverb because the 2007 version, unlike ALL previous versions, doesn’t really have any!! I’ve already opined on how I feel about this in several YT comments over the years so I’ll say no more… 😉
Thanks to everyone who’s ‘bought me a coffee’, I’ve been able to puchase 112dB’s rather wonderfully analog sounding Redline Equaliser which is now my EQ-of-choice for general EQ’ing duties (I still use FabFilter for surgical stuff) and LiquidSonics’ Seventh Heaven which is easily the best reverb plugin I’ve ever heard!! Perfect for those Mellotron choirs! 😊
It's scored, of course, with Sibelius 7.5
The piano audio was created in Presonus Studio One v4.5 using Modartt’s Pianoteq 7 Steingraeber Grand piano and processed thru the above-mentioned EQ and Valhalla’s VintageVerb & Delay.
Loads of performance notes in the PDF!
That’s it, have fun! 👍
