Hard disagree. The expiration date refers not only to the young retirement ages but the fact that these young girls would have chronic injuries before they hit 25 years old. Take Evgenia Medvedeva, who has such a severe back injury that she cannot turn her body to the left. Further, it is insane that these girls are experiencing the peaks of their ice skating careers before they’re even old enough to have a drivers license in most places. It is very clear, and has been clear for some time now, that the Eteri training method does not create long term competitive skaters. It creates skaters who are able to do insane jumps and break new records for a relatively short time before developing a life-long injury.

I feel like the mental aspect gets neglected. Athletes at this level are more than 100% devoted to their sport. At the same time they have to endure a lot of unpleasant circumstances, pressure, public opinion, maybe difficulties in their personal life. It's not a sustainable lifestyle, sooner or later you just want a less intense life, maybe float for a while, develop a well-rounded personality, focus on your family, lead a more diverse lifestyle, have more autonomy.

yeahh no, the girls that have retired on the eteri team have come out saying that she was in fact abusive. god one of the girl's mother couldn't even move to where she was training because she was considered a "distraction". yulia was diagnosed with severe anorexia due to the awful diets these girls are on, they "expire" so quickly because eteri doesn't work on strength and only body weight which works until they turn into woman and get injured to the point where they cant skate and live their daily lives without pain.

It’s video manipulates information. Zhenya or Anna do want to skate and compete but their bodies are damaged and that’s just what they state themselves. Kostornaia expressly accused Tutberidze of destroying her health. Alysa Liu retired because she wanted to live a normal teenage life. She could keep going, just didn’t want to. And also, why would you say no one mentions Alysa? I feel like all the community cried after she announced she’s retiring.

I noticed Russian skaters retire early not because they couldn't skate anymore but because they couldn't be competitive against younger Russian girls with high level TES. They could skate with triple jumps (not including 3A) but that won't make the cut domestically but they could be competitive internationally.

I disagree, yes most tutberidze skaters can still jump one or two triples after retiring but they’re not in shape for a competitive program anymore. We‘ve yet to see a competitive team tut skater over 18 so I do think there’s truth to the „expiration date“

yeah no, youre very optimistic about eteri's training technique when the girls who left her literally spoke out about her abuse, evgenia literally cannot turn her body in one direction cuz of a back injury and many of her skaters lose the ability to jump well when they turn seniors mostly due to stress fractures, glad that the ISU is raising minimums to 17 so that eteri cant pull this bullshit anymore with these poor little girls

Expiration date is used to refer to the harsh style of training in sambo-70 that forces the skaters to retire at a young age if they don't want to end up disabled. Figure skating training is harsh in general and many people retire for different reasons, but numerous girls retiring at around 18, not to mention how many of them retired because of serious injuries or health conditions, and all those from the same camp clearly indicates that the problem is within that camp. Also while most of them are still good skaters they are not able to compete with younger skaters on the same level as before. You're good for couple years until your body no longer can sustain that amount of physical labor and then someone younger comes who still can and the cycle repeats again. This is not to say that this girls didn't deserve what they achieved, it is just sad that they had to ruin their health to get there at such a young age and that shouldn't be the standard.

Landing jumps in ice shows isn't the same as landing them back to back in a freeskate. Zhenya, Aliona, and Daria retired due to severe injuries, Alina due to inconsistency (her jumps had no height), Lipnitskaya, and I think Polina Shelepen retired due to severe Anorexia (we know Eteri is very controlling with food), and others like Panenkova just disappeared. The only skaters who really could've stayed competing were Alina (inconsistent jumps but always had huge PCS), and Anya. Sasha has all her triples still, but she seemingly never recovered from her foot fracture, which I imagine is part of why she's stopped for now.

No other coach has this high of a failure rate with their skaters, and no other coach has skaters getting stress fractures so often.

If you follow artistic gymnastics you'll find the early retirement there is more or less the same as it is in figure skating, with both Simone Biles (26) and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade (24) being exceptions and both still were the best gymnasts past World Championships. I believe longevity in both sports can be achieved as long as the competitor takes care of both mental and physical health.

I think that if the competition in other countries was as fierce as in Russia then the situation in these countries would be pretty much the same. Of course younger skaters can perform more easily quads than "older" skaters. Also, if you skate since 4 years old and have won all the major titles by the time you are 17 years old, then understandably the motivation is lost, especially when you have many other offers like shows etc. which pay the athlete a lot of money as well. For us fans it's a disappointment not to see our favourite skaters anymore, but they have the right to enjoy their life outside the ice rink.

I dont agree. While the post-career show performances of the Russian skaters are still at a high level, they are not competitive enough within Russia to beat the 15/16 year olds, thus, they are forced to retire early. Yes, there are skaters that retire at 16 in US and other places. But in Russia, what we are seeing are skaters forced out of the sport almost systematically once they get too old in favour of younger skaters. In the US, you see a greater variety of career paths and retirement ages.

This isn't about the fact that they don't skate anymore, but about their many really dangerous injuries, which they are getting from the ages of 15 - 18🤦‍♀️

This is a hard pill to swallow when Russian skaters from the 90s retired at 22-27yrs old (irina slutskaya, Maria butyrskaya). Alyssa Liu retired because she wanted to go back to school full time. Tara Lipinski retired after her Olympic win because of her hip. While I don’t doubt Russian ladies skaters of today are enjoying their “retirement”, it’s hard to buy this when you know that the main 3A’s were out injured for awhile. Eteri’s methods are good for under developed female bodies, she does not know how to handle her skaters once they are no longer children and have developed physically & mentally.

tbh there's no point in skating when u gain all the titles at 15, no point of trying too hard, but now with new age limit they might skate longer, and I don't think jumping two or three triple jumps during routine is impressive, 'cause they still train for shows, again there's also ban on Russian skaters so if they can't switch they prefer to retire

I think that it must be incredibly hard for a russian skater to continue to push through if they are not currently top 3 in the country and with all of the juniors coming for them all the time with difficult jumps. Russian skaters know that every season counts and then unfortunately they feel the need to skate with awful injuries. I still cannot believe that Evgenia skated with broken vertebrae and now cannot turn to the left. Also, despite the fact that I love how the technical boundaries of skating are pushed, I feel that all of their focus is on the jumps & jumps alone. Eteri girls have bad skating skills simply because they don't need to develop them since judges overscore them (perfect example - Sasha). So, I hope that with the new age limit, more girls will focus a bit more on overall presentation and have time to develop artistically.

Is Eteri a tough trainer? Absolutely. But there seems to be a pattern. Everyone is looking at one pattern but nobody looks at the other. These young Russians are training to excellence and peeking very early. When you train that hard very early you will burn out earlier. Before they burn out, they reach the highest levels in the sport with countless gold medals from international competitions. In contrast, before skaters would have longer careers but they would not peek until later. With the onset of ultra c elements it has changed the game because grown woman cannot perform quadruple jumps. It's much easier for younger girls to do them or possible at all. Therefore, that is why the standards are changing because Russia is pushing for the ultra c which only teens can do. The only way to stop the cycle is to completely eliminate Ultra c elements. It's a shame because skaters like Kamila Valieva are truly once in a lifetime athletes and I would have loved to enjoy her balletic and incredible skating abilities for years to come. I believe she's the greatest skater that ever lived she is so beautiful to watch, as evidenced by her career even pre-junior she was remarkable. But sadly if she cannot jump a quad then she cannot be competitive in Russia and therefore will not be sent to international competition

Alysa retired because she wanted to, not because she couldn't move her back any longer.

This is completely true; ice skating is for everyone even me. I do competitions internationally and training is extremely important.
