A 2900 player has to be mathematically 1.78 TIMES better than a 2800 player.

I don't think most people realize just how massive the difference is. "It's just 100 points, it's not that big a deal" until you realize that the Elo scale is logarithmic. By design and choice of scale, a player being rated 400 higher than another means that they are 10 times more likely to win games. And if you downscale the definition, a played rated 100 higher is 1.78 more likely to win games. In other words a player rated 2800 would need to become almost 3 times as good to get to 2900. Imagine Magnus but 2 times stronger. That's why it's almost humanly impossible.
