Don't Harvest Garlic Early! - Garden Garden Quickie Ep154

It's Almost Garlic Time.....Almost! I know us hardneck growers have been waiting a long time, since last fall, but our garlic is STILL not ready. The scapes have come and gone, we're no longer fertilizing, and we only have a couple of waterings left.

In today's Quickie, we'll look at what happens when we harvest our garlic too early, even if by just a couple of weeks. Its the last 5 to 10% of the life cycle where the garlic bulbs really swell and give us that epic harvest. Patience is the key.

Great video Jeff. Now you can make a follow up video. "Don't pull garlic too late. When you wait too long the bulb will open up. Still good but a lot harder to clean. Learned this the hard way.

I planted 72 cloves last fall and only 2 of them made it. One per garden bed. 😂😭 I have not given up and will try again next year. Gardening sure keeps a human humble.

My scapes appeared a week or two ago. They made it into a veggie stir fry mix that we enjoyed. Now waiting for the bottom leaves to turn brown and the others fade to yellowing at the ends. Anticipation !

I didn't know that!!! It is the last couple of weeks before harvest that garlic does it's major bulb growing and I did know it takes over 9 months to grow.

Not going to lie I pulled mine this week per the suggestion from the lady at the farmers market who I originally got the garlic from last year. Fortunately mine were huge and looked great!

Holy moley, youve still some of lasts harvest??
I've three large raised beds of garlic this year as two didnt last long enough!
And most of them havent seen their 'scapes' yet. 5 or so have and I cut them off quickly and eaten them. Delicious!

Growing garlic, ginger, and turmeric continues to kick my butt. Prepping new 45-gallon fabric pots with cover crop, worms, and such for garlic now with hopes that the soil will be ready for a fall planting. Planning to take another stab at turmeric and ginger this fall in my grow room. Thinking I can split a 45-gallon between the two while I grow an equatorial strain of cannabis (Dr. Grinspoon) in a 3x3 bed over winter; light cycles and environment should coincide. Thoughts?
