I did an experiment with my garlic this year. Here he Georgia, we usually plant them in october to over winter them.
This year, i left a bed open and didn’t plant garlic until may. But before planting them, i got them to sprout on a tray with some soil. Once they sprouted, i covered them with a bit of mulch and stuck them in the fridge for 2 weeks. I then planted them with the sprouts sticking out of the ground about 1”.
I just started harvesting the garlics i put down in october. I compared these bulbs to the ones that are still in the ground (planted in may) and they are about the same size.
This works really good for me, because from now on, instead of having a bed occupied by dormant garlics trought winter, i can have some cold weather crop in it.
I did put down 5 garlics without sticking them in the fridge. They are making cloves too, but they are significantly smaller. So, they do seem to need the cold.

FORGIVENESS: I'm in Virginia and may have harvested my garlic a little early in mid-June, but as you said it was forgiving and delicious. Don't worry though, I would never miss one of your episodes! 🧄🧄🧄

Nice! Harvested scapes about three weeks ago, they were delicious! Still lots of greenery on the plants though, but I did pull one to see how it was developing. Almost there! Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video Jeff!

We harvested ours on the 7th July. Planted 4th Dec. It may have been slightly early but it has pretty much been raining since, here in the UK with humid weather.

Garlic was a lot better than last year in the heatwave and i would rather harvest it slightly early, when it was drier than now, risking bulb rot or the paper skin tearing.

For our climate, i do believe putting them into the fridge before sowing did make a difference. Hard neck garlic wasn't so great, so may stick to soft neck from now on as we got much better results.

Awesome video Jeff. I plant mine about middle of October and harvest 1st week of July. That is in Zone 6. Got mine hanging up. This is a crop that just keeps on giving. Have a great weekend.

Does the same rule of thumb apply to softneck garlic for harvest time, and, do softneck garlics tend to take more time growing than hardneck? I planted both hardneck and softneck on the same day last fall. I harvested my hardneck yesterday. My softneck is still quite green. Thank you!

Man! You make it look too easy! I haven't had a good garlic harvest in 3 years! I got small bulbs again this year and my elephant garlic died. Sooo disappointing! I planted something like 200 of three different varieties and got literally mostly smalls. Nootka Rose, Spanish Roja and Elephant Garlic - all duds for me!

This year I had flowers in my garlic. I had another variety. The garlic is good and big but that was strange because I never had that. Is it possible that some variety flower before harvesting?

What happens if I harvest the garlic when the brown leaves are 60% vs 80%. I tihnk right now it's close to 40-50%, so I'd like to know what happens if I harvest now vs a few days from now vs. in a week? And I've stopped watering.

My garlic still has some green but has a big seed flowery round thing on top.. Bottom leaves are all brown, if it went to seed, should I still harvest? too late? Should I have harvested before seeded?
