The current is caused by the internal resistances of the batteries, smaller batteries have a higher source internal resistance which causes the current to be less since It = Vs / Rt, where Rt is the total resistance. So although the batteries are the same voltage their internal resistances are different.

Hope you can answer, does thickness of wire matter, I'm looking to use correct wire on one side but as where battery be there be a technically a thicker wire other side, as one side be a bolt with current going through so I thought what is best way round, bolt on negative or positive side?
