// My Story

I am currently a software developer who once modeled and thought I wanted to pursue a career in the fashion industry. While I was modeling in Hong Kong, I eventually felt the desire to further my education. I decided to depart the modeling world and move back to Canada, knowing that could be the end of my modeling opportunities. I attended Ryerson University for GCM (Graphic Communications Management), as I thought I might still work in the fashion industry in another capacity. It was in my last year of university, I was introduced to a very basic coding course. I instantly fell in love. From there I knew I wanted to pursue software development but didn't have a clue where to start. I didn't want to go back to university as I just completed a four-year degree. I decided to enroll in a 10-week intensive coding Bootcamp. From there I started working at a small startup learning and growing my technical and soft skills. I then transitioned to a larger company where I am a software developer and technical consultant today.

Learn networking basics and build on that. Understand basics like subnets, routing vs routed protocols. Get certified, not certificates of completion. PowerShell, bash, python. Ping, nslookup, traceroute. Foundational concepts and tools will help no matter what area you decide to specialize in. Excel. Can't emphasize it enough, learn Excel. You use it for everything, every day. Learn to take good notes. The "hot certs" change but underlying functionality doesn't. I see data science, AI, ML, hot right now. Next year will be slightly different, so on. And be a person. If you're arrogant, difficult to work with, or people don't like you, you'll be first to go when layoffs come, no matter how smart you are.

I really like your videos, sometimes we forget to look at other jobs in the same area where we work and we loose the full perspective. About the salaries, well that's a different story, I currently work for mobile applications and my salary has increased about 4 times since I started, but I'm doing almost the same job since the beginning, the only difference is that now I know how to negotiate a little better

Hey Tiff, I appreciate all the great content, especially your tech careers videos. I myself have decided to pursue QA as my starting point. I know you also have experience in QA but I'm just curious why it never gets mentioned as an option in addition to the relevant certifications such as ISTQB?

Well presented.
I would also add basic certifications such as ITIL, but especially new ones such as AIOps.

Enjoyed the video until you mentioned CISSP as one of the best first certifications to get. CISSP is considered "the gold standard' for cyber security and you need 5 freakin years of real life work experience working in cyber security. And the exam is considered one of the hardest out there. Anyone who is entering the cyber security should try to score an easier cert to land on the first job and from there work towards CISSP.

Great content. I would like to share one story of a friend of my friend. He learned code by himself and he only had his portfolio done, barely had 2 certifications in his CV. So, the recruiter asked him why he forgot to add the certification to CV, so he explained he doesn't have them. He learned through YouTube/forum/reedit and so on. He went through the process with recruiter, got the job, and a very good starting salary just because he had shown he is a pro active person.

CISSP is an endgame cert for security professionals not a first cert to get

What is your advice for a person to start working in tech with absolutely zero knowledge and experience at all?
Where does a person start?
What are the specific things to learn?
So much information online and books but still lost with no direction in terms of tech. Thank you for the video and information.

HI! I'm from Italy and I'm studiyng for AWS Solution Architect Assiociate and I've also planned for others AWS certifications like ML and Cybersecurity. Of course, the majority of the documentations for study these certifications are in english ( which is pretty ok for me, it will take less time for me if they were in Italian), but certainly not for everyone in my country. This leads me to think whether it is an advantage for me or even a disadvantage, thinking of the fact that here the companies will certainly "evolve" later (as well as in other states)

This is exciting for me.
Have a nice day
