An Earth-like planet that orbits around the edge of its star's habitable zone has been discovered by scientists in the constellation of Cygnus. Other habitable stars have been found before, but none so closely match with the Earth's size.

The planet, known as Kepler-186f, is about 500 light-years away from Earth. It was discovered by the Kepler space telescope, which finds the planet by measuring the amount of starlight blocked when a planet passes in front of its star. Scientist then use the data recovered to determine the size of the planet and to estimate its mass and density.

Kepler-186f is about 1.1 times the size of Earth. Research suggests that a planet this size is likely to be rocky. Kepler-186f orbits around its star once every 130 days and lies at a distance from its star that would allow liquid water to exist on its surface.

Kepler-186f is the outermost planet in the Kepler-186 System, which has five known planets orbiting around an M-dwarf star. With its smaller star, the planet receives only about one-third the heat energy that Earth gets from the Sun. However, as a smaller star is more active, it is more likely to produce more solar flares and radiation potentially harmful to life.

Even though the planet is in the habitable zone of its system, whether it is actually habitable is unclear.

Doesn't matter what they find. They can't get there anyways.

Hopefully people can live there soon. That would be cool

@Benjamin Ashbury I feel ya man, mine gets pretty good mileage, but my flux capacitor went out a couple days ago so I'm currently stranded in orbit around Kepler-22b. Been waiting for Eddie's International Space tow to get here.

Well, when I'm 36 years old, I'm gonna build a teleporter if they don't reach yet when I am 36.

It would be funny if there were humans there as dumb as our species.

Not the  first. More than 8 earth like planets that could be habitable have been spotted.

how long a way is 500 light years? 100 years?

I hope (although it's pretty much impossible for me) that I live to see our species travel to and Earth-like planet and I can see the animals that live there etc....

1/3 our TSI, so it's probably freaking Hoth.

I wonder how life has evolved in that planet. If there are species smarter than us there then maybe they have technology to reach us, hopefully not in terms of an invasion.

Are kids gonna have to learn about that planet and learn the new order of the planets?

Is it correct to say, that this planet is about km  away from the earth

Are we gonna live there when the earth end

1 light year is thousands of years and you can get there fastest at the speed of light so yea... We won't be adventuring on to that planet
