India's population by mid-year is projected to surpass China in taking the title of the world's most populous nation, according to a recent report from the United Nations. What does this mean for the country and the world? And while India's population has been rising, China's has been declining, sparking discussions over the country's demographic transition and what it could mean for the economy.

Guests in this edition of Dialogue are Prof. Tim Dyson, emeritus professor of population studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science; Hu Naijun, associate professor of the School of Public Policy and Management at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Wang Huiyao, president at the Center for China and Globalization; and Prof. Madhav Nalapat, vice-chairman at Manipal Advanced Research Group.

It means no sense of population control when the amount of arable land and potable water is decreasing. And the caste system is still in force.

It's not how big your population is, it's how you use it. India having a large population can backfire and create a food shortage crisis, unemployment, and terrorism.

Most important for any man or woman is the quality of life.
Can India support good quality of life for such high population?? I want to live in luxury and not poverty.

Not much. Raw numbers are meaningless if you can't organize them efficiently. India's tribal democratic politics and infiltration by western financial interests are huge drains on its economy and growth.

Populous country has an advantage to achieve it's goal.
But, it is not necessary meant it is able to tackle it successfully.
At the same time, it is a burden for it's nation considering about poverty, education, housing, employment and security.

All the best India. Managing such a large population, anything less than what the Chinese is doing in terms of efficiency, there will be trouble. China may not have the best country management system but to cater to such large population, it is as good as it can go. If India continues to grow in population without improving its efficiency in managing the country, it will be a disaster. Plenty to do!

Who cares which country has a higher population? It really does not matter. What matters is the quality of the population and the quantity! So let's relax and let each country develop the way it wants. Peace!

India should seek Xi Jin Ping's help to uplift the majority of their Indian population out of poverty.

High population is no longer a competitive advantage in this era of advanced robotics and automation. More mouths to feed must be matched by higher growth in productivity. Otherwise there's not much to share and poverty level will rise.

Not necessary a good thing for India. If not govern properly without much future opportunities in education, jobs, health, food, supplies, etc., the country will face unsatisfaction, anger, protests and demonstrations.

China's One Child Policy, many critics, many proponents and an equal number of people who are not sure if it's a right or wrong move. Well, India would certainly one day provide the answer, when Indians are down on their knees begging the rest of the world for food

Nothing I guess, since the one child policy goal was to lower down the population
