It's one of the reason that nearly every gen 3 Pokémon hack rom changed espeon and umbreon to be stone evolution with the sun and moon stones

What I wish FRLG did:
If you were indoors or underground, Umbreon.
If you were basking in the sunlight, Espeon.

This happens in HGSS with Glaceon, Leafeon, Probopass, and Magnezone. Scarlet and Violet with Ursaluna, Wydreer, and some regional variants, needing a different set of games to evolve them.

You missed a step, beat the post game, then do all the steps

Fun fact due to a weird choice by game freak pokemon that got new evolutions since gen 1 couldn’t evolve until the post game
But this also applies to pokemon that were introduced in later gens so if you traded in say a hoothoot then it could not evolve
That’s why I hate doing randomizers in those games

Apparently there is still a similar case for Scarlet and Violet, but it only applies to some moves and not pokemon. For example, the data for Thousand Arrows exists but Zygarde can't be transfered.

This time mechanic was annoying. I wanted an Espeon in my fire red, so when I received the level 25 Eevee in the apartment, I raised its friendship to max (or what I thought was max) and traded it it to my sapphire game. What I didn’t know was that its friendship was RESET when traded! It makes sense now, but 10-year-old me was devastated. I had to redo all that hard work. 😓

How is *nobody* mentioning the fact that all you have to do is start Pokémon Collosseum, catch your first (maybe 2 due to 100% double battles) shadow Pokémon, then transfer the Umbreon and Espeon you get as level 20 starters to FireRed/LeafGreen, then just start a new game on Collosseum again to get your starters back.

Saves a lot of time if you're doing it legit and have all the resources required

And the best part is you can't do this before beating the game because the game blocks non gen 1 trades
