Canon’s CRAZY “SECRET” Update Tested: WOW!!!

Canon pretty much silently released new Firmware for their EOS R3, R5, and R6 without making a big deal about it. The one new mode they added to the R3, is directly in response to the Nikon Z9 shooting 120 FPS. I took the R3 and a 400 2.8 out to the Phillies game to see if I could get some fascinating results using this new mode. Here's what I got.

Jesus. I can only compliment the engineers at Canon for accomplishing this. I'll never use it, but the amount of effort they must've put into this is insane. 0.0001% of users will actually use it, but it's really cool. This is just another tool in the bag for professionals to get even cooler shots. Last Olympics a photographer caught a bullet coming out of a gun with a Nikon Z9. Next Olympics, it'll be an everyday shot because of the amazing equipment that the photographers have access to.

The firmware uppdates in cameras today are pretty sick, not like my 5d3s where they fixed an obscure ”phenomena” and a spelling error in africaan

I can easily imagine some commercial/advertising shoots where a quick burst can save multiple tries of some water droplet hitting something at just the right time. Could save a whole day of working in the best scenarios.

This feature seems to be pretty useful if you do a lot of lightning photography or something to where infinite focus is also utilized.

Also this just makes me think the R1 is going to be phenomenal. I love my R5 but never have had a 1 series Canon maybe this time!

Olympus has in my opinion a more useful high speed feature, as it retains about 10 images(?) or so prior to actually activating the shutter button - it has to remains half-pressed. Wish Canon could incorporate something similar - 195 shots per second is going to clog the buffer, if you don't anticipate the moment quite right....

06:34 Canon probably will leave that for the R1. But also, at a quarter of a second, I feel we need more tests to see where it can fail on the focus. Either way, some exciting times for sure.

Pre- and Post-Trigger shooting exists since years in the EOS M6 Mark2 and I love it - makes spectacular Thunderstorm pictures pretty easy - unfortunately at a reduced RAW resolution.
