Episode 15: Itchy Skin & Chronic Kidney Disease - A sign of low kidney function & high phosphorus. It is common for people with Chronic Kidney Disease to experience uncontrolled itching, itchy skin all over their body, and especially itchy legs. This itchy skin may be a serious sign of two symptoms of kidney disease. The problem of itchy skin and kidney disease is dangerously high phosphorus. The second problem is the pulling of calcium out of your bones, leading to weak and brittle bones. Itchy skin with kidney disease is dangerous if not reported to your kidney doctor or nephrologist right away. Always report any new symptoms to your kidney doctor so that they can address them before they become serious. You will need to adjust your kidney diet and may need to take phosphorus binders to further reduce the phosphorus you ingest if you have too much phosphorus. There may be other causes of itchy skin, so ALWAYS work with your health care team to find the cause and put together a solution.

Symptoms of Kidney failure and high phosphorus in a renal diet include itchy skin, uncontrolled itching, and your skin itching even when sleeping, especially itchy legs. This symptom typically occurs at the low end of stage 3, stage 4, and stage 5.

Kidney Health – When your kidneys are healthy, they remove waste and excess toxins from your blood. Kidney health is also vital in regulating blood pressure and building strong bones.

When you have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) your kidney disease directly impacts your kidney function, reducing how well your kidneys remove toxins and waste from your blood. People with kidney disease also have difficulty controlling their blood pressure since it is one of the functions of a healthy kidney.

Everyone with Chronic Kidney Disease should work with their doctor to customize their own strategy. It is critical to follow your doctor's instructions for the plan specific to your kidney disease. Your doctor may prescribe medications, a kidney diet, and set limits for your daily Phosphorus, Potassium, Sodium, Protein, Carbohydrates, and Calcium.

By not following your doctor's plan and eating a healthy kidney diet, you will eventually end up with end-stage renal failure, also known as stage 5 kidney disease or Kidney Failure. At that point, your kidney disease diet will become extremely strict, and you may need to consider dialysis to stay alive. Dialysis does not duplicate all of the kidney's functions, and it is hard on your body as it uses machines to detox your kidneys and removes waste and toxins from your blood. It should be your goal to avoid dialysis by working with your doctor to improve your kidney function.

To prevent Kidney failure, follow your kidney doctor and kidney dietician's recommended kidney diet. Also, understand that there currently is no cure for Kidney Disease. However, it is possible to improve your kidney function and increase your GFR through the proper kidney diet and treatment.

If you have Chronic Kidney Disease, you also must manage your blood sugar levels (diabetes) and high blood pressure (hypertension) very carefully. Uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure can damage your kidneys, reduce kidney function, and increase toxins and waste in your blood. They also put additional stress on your kidneys, causing inflammation that reduces kidney function and lowers your GFR.

I encourage others to educate themselves on Kidney Disease and fight kidney disease. Join me and learn how you can prevent kidney disease, how to avoid kidney failure, and how to improve kidney function naturally.

Thank you for confirming what I always believed. Eczema is extremely itchy and chronic for most. My advise to manage it has always been 1. Plant based clean eating 2. Hydration 3. Manage stress. No sugar, salt, preservatives, chemicals, over processed food from boxes.

I used to have itchy skin but not too excessive yet. Since I started to restrict my phosphorus to no more than 1000 mg, the itching is gone. Good thing I don’t drink soda. I used to eat a lot of nuts like sunflower seeds and they are loaded with phosphorus.

Thank you! I've been itchy for a few days now. Menopause can also give us itchy skin but I do have chronic renal failure, so .... I don't drink coffee, soda, or alcohol, but have been drinking black tea lately.

Thank you for this! As you said doctors really don't start worrying about kidneys until something goes horribly wrong... Then it could be too late..
