How to bake even cake layers

Slicing into a cake with perfectly proportioned layers and frosting is a sight to behold. But how do you get those layers to be so exact? One simple trick ensures that your layers are evenly sized. Watch the steps in our video and learn the technique.

Instructions: Place a mixing bowl on your digital scale and press tare. Fill the bowl with your cake batter, and then weigh the bowl again.

Calculate half the weight of the batter: This is the amount you want in each pan.

Spray two non-stick cake pans with oil, and place a round of parchment paper in the bottom of each pan.

Place one empty cake pan on the scale, and press tare. Pour half the cake batter, by weight, into the pan. Repeat with the remaining batter and pan.

If necessary, adjust the amount of batter in each pan until they’re exactly equal.

Use an offset spatula to smooth the top of the batter in each pan.

Bake according to your recipe.

I'm guessing they weren't flat because we weren't shown the results, which is pretty much exactly what this video is supposed to be about.
Two words, Cake Strips! 🙂

I have a set of Wilton cake batter measuring spoons. All I have to do is know the size of the cake pan & the spoons have the amount on them, that you put in each cake pan! Comes out equal every time! Also you can do all of this & stand on your head, if your oven isn’t level, your still going to get lopsided cake layers! I had that problem years ago before we got a new double oven! Some ovens just won’t level very well!

Thanks! What a great idea! I have also never thought to spread the batter after to make them smooth.

Use a cake strip. You can buy one or make one yourself. That’s the best way

Thank you for the video. I’ve always liked KA products and professionalism. There are always shortcuts and other ways to do things like this video shows. This is a neat example of one of those ways. Thanks again.

A scale and level batter doesn't make for a level cake!

I need help-
I am making a 3 layer cake and I am using 10 x 3 deep baking pans. I will be
using Duncan Hines box mixes. Layer 1- Chocolate, Layer 2-Red Velvet and 3-
Vanilla.  My question (of which I can’t
find any help with) is will one box fill one 10x3 layer? Or do I need 2 boxes
per layer to be safe? Also when filling the pans, I should only come up about 1
inch from the top correct? I know that I can trim it later if it goes beyond
that. Please Help
