1890s Sports Corset: I Made a Ferris Good Sense Waist #CorsetryInMotion

Let's replicating an original late 1890s Ferris Good Sense Corset Waist! Looking at an extant example got me off to a good start, and helped me understand the construction and materials used.

This was a fun and all-consuming project. It started with the researching of primary sources --from various fashion magazines and other period publications, to an extant garment in a private collection-- and it continued on into the modification of an 1890s fashion corset to more closely resemble a Ferris Corset Waist pattern, and then into the selection of appropriate materials, and the construction of the actual corset!

Look for the small supplementary video on the patented buttonhole strip next week!

Wow taping yout buttons down before sewing is a genius idea and honestly actually life changeing! I used to use 4 pins to hold them in place but the only thing that method was good at was to stab me into my fingers...
Your corset turned out beautiful those cute little buttons are a perfect addition!

Awesome job! And thank you for sharing the not so perfect moments. Its a good reminder that we all make mistakes, and sometimes taking a step back and reassessing can turn it from an issue into a lesson in a bit more patience! And of course Cannelle footage!

Beautiful! Great explanations! I also appreciate the matter of fact expressions. I utterly dislike getting a pain in the part of me being tallest when picking lingonberries (!) You're saving my bacon!

You may want to try placing a ribbon over the grammits next time your mashine refuses the motion. It works with mine, and the ribbon will easily be removed as soon as it's served it's makeshift purpose.
Thank you so much for posting!

How have I not seen this yet? For some time, I’ve had a project in mind of a custom support garment for myself, combining the benefits of a stay, a sport corset, and a chest binder. I’ve been trying to do research, but it’s definitely more difficult to find info on some things than others. Thank you for this!

Thank you for this whole series of videos. It’s so nice to learn more about the practical side of historical dress and not just high fashion. I’m making 1905 outfits for my nearly 2 year old daughter and myself. And as far as I can tell the child corsets are pretty close to the health/adult corsets.
I have some cotton canvas I use for my own corset mock-ups and some coutil. Do you think I can use that for her corset or would you rather recommend I order the fabric you used in this video? Also where did you buy your cording?

I live in Denmark, so it’s really nice to see danish stores mentioned.

Grinning at the poing-poing part at the end😁
It looks useful! Love that the straps are more to the middle at the back, almost like a halter top.

Glad you included that graphic from Foundations Revealed, I used it as a basis for my own half-corset a couple years ago but the graphic I had had no date or attribution, this has been corrected in my notes! Grandted, what I made actually looks very little like the scaled up pieces cause weird torso, but enh, gotta start somewhere.

Thank you for this. I got an idea to do a Victorian-inspired cosplay back in January but had no idea where to start. An athletic corset is officially my next sewing project.
