Thus was the closest recipe i could find, to what my grandmother made. I'm glad you didn't use sour cream or lemon or orange zest.
Although my nan did use a can of sweetenned carnation brand milk. It's quite thick and sweet. I'm not sure what you call it in your country.

No sourcream or alcohol? Also, I think your oil was not hot enough when you put them in. Which recipe are you following here? I like the quote at the beginning though :)
