What is AC power? What is an alternating current? How is an alternating current generated? Alternating currents are exactly what they sound like. A flow of electrons that changes direction - an alternating current! This video explains how they are created, in a simplified manner.

As an electrical computer engineer major, i must applaud you on the information packed videos you have put on youtube. Concise and summarized in a simple manner. well done!!

I think you're supposed to use Flemings Right Hand rule for induced emfs and current not Flemings left hand rule, its used for the force on a current carrying wire.

Thank you SO much! For 10 years I have never fully understood why the direction flips, because nobody ever explained the Magnetic Field/Force/Current axis before! That makes so much more sense now!

Very helpful video, you have no idea how simple you've made this sound compared to my btec course book. Thanks you

Buddy, if you don't teach for your profession, I'll drop an AC generator on your sack! You've got an incredible ability to teach. Thanks for all your posts!

Literally didn't understand AC generation until I watched this, my physics exam (which includes this) is tomorrow and this 3 year old video saved me!

Hey I know this is kind of a dated video, but I usually find myself looking for you to explain how certain things work. In this case in particular I was wondering more about how the alternator accounts for load increases on it?

For example, let's say you are running your heated seats. Unlike running your A/C or Heat, additional fans and such are not mechanically actuated which will add the extra stress on the engine to compensate. If an alternator would run constant and excess energy is sent back to the battery or just dropped off, then there would be no extra fuel consumption, so that's not the case in most modern cars. Running all your electricals in your car can burn up to a 1/4 g / hr. And if you're not using those electricals, then (although negligible) you are saving gas. So how does the alternator account for the extra load?

For reference, I drive a 2017 GTI and the HUD has a menu which shows fuel consumption derived from the electricals + others (heated seats, lights, AC, air, heated mirrors, sound system, etc.) it maxes at 1/4 g/hr

Good Stuff!  Please, can you cover the pros and cons of integrating the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head?  Also could you do the same with Gas Direct Injection engines?  These designs are becoming more common

I always wondered since we receive an AC Power at home, why do we have Positive and Negative polarity that doesn't constantly change (60 times/sec). Is there something that's done somewhere between the power plant and houses that fix the polarity in one direction?
And thanks for the great video

Hi, I love how you explain things and understand you more than most of the other similar youtube videos. I have learnt alot from you.  If you can, one day, can you make a video on active suspension?  Also, could you make another video on traction control explaining how they limit power/torque going to the wheels?
Thanks

Dear Jason, please do another video - explaining how much power the alternator uses from engine. For example for every watt of electricity how many watts are drained form the engine's kWs. And do the start/stop system of the car give us any benefits of using it in short stops at traffic lights or it doesn't because the power that starter drains from battery worth more fuel consumed after starting because of the load alternator creates... I think people will be interested :)
Cheers :)
