Fun fact about the showing the hand “you lost the war”. That’s not the reason Americans don’t show the hand, they do it like that because that’s how the french do it, and the french do it like that because the British show the hand. The principle was that a British spy in french ranks during the napoleonic war would be rooted out when he gave a salute and instinctively showed the hand. The only British branch that doesn’t is the navy, because it was deemed inappropriate to face dirty and torn hands from tar and rope to an officer

The real reason is that the British salute goes all the way back to when they had knights on horseback. They would show their face to their opponent by lifting the flap of their helmet. The easiest way to do that was to tilt your head down a little bit put your hand under the visor and then lift it up keeping it on the back of your palm, which is why it is a palm forward, salute. If you just read books when you’re a kid, you can save yourself as an adult.
