Death of a Party Girl
by TV Girl

Lyrics:
She asked me how to be funny
But that’s not something you can teach
What seemed so blue in the sunlight
By the night was a pale green

And I tried to hold her
But it didn’t really last long
And she’s getting older
I guess she’s gotta cut her blue hair off

She asked me if she was pretty
Well it’s clear that the girl’s a fraud
There’s really no way of winning
If in their eyes you’ll always be a dumb blonde

And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop
Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off

It looked like cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away
Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age

And I guess I’ll just miss her
Even though she isn’t even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off

-

"Her hair was unkempt, frazzled, as though she'd been trying to tear it out by the roots, and her face seemed shapeless, blank. But maybe it was the distance or the strange light, because as she came towards me, moving coldly, disdainfully, yet dreamily, not as a body but as shifting shimmering light, she seemed to grow in stature and her years dropped away. She walked like a good politician, simulating dignity, self-assurance, humility. Already practicing probably for the last walk to follow."

-The Public Burning

released May 8, 2018

All the songs were written by Brad Petering.

And were mixed and mastered by Jason Wyman.

The Song "Drift Down" incorporates elements of a song of the same name by a group called "Snow Mantled Love" A great band that never got their fair due.

The song "Death of a Party Girl" uses a sample of the song "New Tomorrow" by the Legendary Pink Dots. Used here with the generous permission of lead dot Edward Ka-Spel.

Additional vocals were provided by Molly Raney, who performs as "Poppet" and is worth checking out.

Even more additional vocals were provided by Lydia Fothergill.

[Verse 1]
She asked me how to be funny
But that’s not something you can teach
What seemed so blue in the sunlight
By the night was a pale green

[Chorus 1]
And I tried to hold her
But it didn’t really last long
And she’s getting older
I guess she’s gotta cut her blue hair off

[Verse 2]
She asked me if she was pretty
Well it’s clear that the girl’s a fraud
There’s really no way of winning
If in their eyes you’ll always be a dumb blonde

[Chorus 2]
And she cried over nothing
So there was nothing I could do to stop
Her from cutting
Her beautiful blue hair off

[Verse 3]
It looked like cotton candy
And just as quick to get licked away
Last I heard she was living
With a boy who acts his age

[Chorus 3]
And I guess I’ll just miss her
Even though she isn’t even really gone
But things are just different
Ever since she cut her blue hair off

I’ve seen several different interpretations for this song, so I wanna give my thoughts. I think the blue haired girl is moving on with her life, growing, and maturing, while the singer is stuck in the past. The girl is transforming from a teen to an adult, so she’s growing up. She’s no longer as rebellious as she used to be, and she’s embracing her natural self, much to the singer’s disdain. Of course, he’s not actually talking about hair. He’s talking about who she was when she had blue hair. Her cutting her blue hair off was a signifier that she was changing. Overall this is a lovely song through both perspectives. On one hand, it’s about a girl growing up and maturing, but on the other hand it’s about a boy who longs for things to return to the ways they once were and who the girl used to be. She’s different now, she’s matured and moved on. It’s like an old friend changing, you know they’re not really gone, but they’ve changed and you just want to have your old friend back

"And I tried to hold her, but it didn’t really last long and she’s getting older" reminds me of how the older you get, the more you start to see the reality of what life is no matter how hard someone tries to protect you from it.

I actually love how the "parampa" in the background is representing a heartbeat at the choruses

To me, this song is the idea that you don’t love someone despite their flaws, you love them because of their flaws. So when they change you don’t love them the same.

This song is the definition of hypnotic. If you focus on the guitar strums as they contrast against the vocals starting at 1:39 it will become the only thing you can hear in the song. Transfixing in the best of ways.

I interpret this as being about someone who didn't fit in because of her quirks (the "blue hair"), and had to adapt, cutting off all the extraordinary parts of herself in the process. While upset because she gives in so easily (calling her a fraud), the singer can't help but long after the connection he had with the girl, as he watched her become someone bland, someone anonymous.

"And I guess I'll just miss her, even though she isn't even really gone, but things are just different". I really miss what our relationship used to be. I miss who you used to be as well. You're still here, but it's just not the same anymore. I'm afraid things aren't going to work out in the end, but I love you still.

the lyrics "and i guess, i just miss her, even tho she isn't even really gone, things are just different, ever since she cut her blue hair off" for me the blue hair signifies your personality, it is like changing your whole personality and things started to change as you do, but there's a part of you that still misses your old self and wishing for it to comeback

I take this song as the end of an era in someone’s life, everything changing and you’re going through the regret of not living it to the fullest.

My sweet Kiara... Your blue hair was what I loved to see in the mornings, its color reminded me of the sky and caressing it felt like the clouds... I remember when we listened to this song together for the first time, you felt so identified that you made it yours in some way, oh my sweet Kiara, My blue-haired angel... When you were diagnosed with cancer the walls of my world collapsed, but I was strong for you, you used to play this song and dance rocking your blue hair while you danced freely, my sweet Kiara used to be happy, but inside she was broken and scared... Since I stopped seeing your beautiful hair in my mornings my life was no longer the same, your warm side of the bed is now always cold, sometimes I hug it hoping to one day wake up and see your sweet smile again at dawn, but there is no trace of you, my sweet Kiara... This song made you very happy and I did not dare to listen to it because you were no longer there with me... Today I heard this song from a short video and I was in shock, tears fell from my face when I remembered how beautiful you looked dancing with this song in the background and I wanted to look for it to listen to it with my eyes closed, imagining you coming down from heaven for just a second to dance with me, my Kiara... my sweet and precious Angel, wait for me, soon we will dance together wherever you are, I love you.
