The reason why hip replacements are usually delayed as long as possible is because once those hip joints are replaced with artificial ones, then it's only a matter of time before the artificial ones begin to wear down too. Anything artificial in our body isn't as effective as our actual body parts just because of the material of those parts. Lack of synovial fluid makes the socket more prone to friction and can wear down if the person is extremely active and not to mention you can only take so many slips, trips, falls for that artificial joint to eventually fail.

I've had a knee replacement and a total shoulder replacement. I am much happier now. There are some limitations you were left with but not the pain

My mum had this surgery because she had a VERY shallow hip socket ever since she was born, (I also have this too but my parents made preventions to my hip sockets so they weren't as hollow) and my mum got this surgery around 2021 and she can now do things that she loves like hiking and riding her motorbike! I will probably get this one day but I'm still quite young so I'm very fortunate and I also workout to strengthen my hip muscles!

I feel like they should make the socket less thick and the ball thicker and less of a thin connection to the ball so it doesn't pop out easier or get broken easily

My friend was a marathon runner for over 25 years. That took a toll on her hips. She dealt with the pain for years till the point she needed a new hip. After surgery, I asked what the pain was like . She said right away she felt a new pain. The old pain was gone as soon as she woke up. The new pain was from the cutting into her leg. That went away as the time passed. 2 years later, the other hip went, but this time she knew what to expect. She is walking pain free for the first time in 5 years.

My dad had this done earlier this year. It was a disaster. He’d had back surgery done 10 years ago and his bottom 3 vertebrae were fused that the surgeon didn’t take into account. This made his movement especially stiff when sitting and put more strain on his hips. This caused his hip replacement to pop out multiple times. He went through 3 different major surgeries. Winding up in the SICU one night when he got fluid in his lungs.

So for any med students reading comments. If you’re going into surgery. Keep stuff like that in mind. The last surgeon we tried did something different with the angle his hip socket was in and that’s held for 8 months.

I work as a physical therapist. Between knee, shoulder, and hip replacements the hip is by far the safest and easiest of the bunch.

Minimal pain and easy return to walking within 2-4 weeks post-op. Knee and shoulder have way more scar tissue issues and discomfort.

My grandpa got a hip replacement surgery at 85 years old when he had an accident, he almost died after surgery. Now there are times where his new hips hurts. He is 93 now but he can still walk thanks to this.
