I was told that left handed players that have good arms are trained as pitchers.

If you can throw well as a lefty, you’re a pitcher.
If you can catch well as a lefty, you’re a 1st baseman.

I was a lefty catcher in highschool. The amount of people I would pick off first because they didn’t realize I was left handed was insane.

Thank you for this. My boy is a 2x all league catcher from this 8th year to this freshman year. They need more attention!!!

Finding a left handed catchers mitt is the first hurdle.

As a lefty, we are just more prone to adjustment because we’re so uncommon. Therefore, I don’t think it matters if the catcher is lefty or righty.

I’m a left catcher and I do think we have some disadvantages but we also had some advantages. If your willing to put in the effort I don’t think it’s a big difference

Lefty catcher here, and let me offer a perspective on how difficult it is to progress as a lefty catcher. The status quo is that if you have a good arm as a lefty, you’re told to go play pitcher. On the flip side, if you can catch well as a lefty, you’re put at first base. This could all be avoided if coaches at youth levels didn’t ram these positions down our throats when all we want to do is play behind the dish. It is incredibly hard to progress as a lefty catcher because we ultimately dont have a say as to where we are positioned as well as false stereotypical expectations as to our weaknesses playing catcher. Despite popular belief, lefty catchers at high school and amateur levels do perfectly fine picking off runners and throwing people out. While there is a technical disadvantage because of our handedness, this doesn’t really translate to stats because just like at any other position in any sport, we improve and adapt to our situations. Those who don’t adapt switch positions, and those who do still throw fucking lasers to second despite our presumed disadvantage.

TLDR: Lefty catchers are rare because of coaches and a very old and wrong stigma.

💯 they could adapt. Literally watched that guy turn the happy Gilmore swing to hit further/accurate than most pros.

This is what happened to me. I was a lefty catcher and eventually was told to go to 1st. Coach said that pitchers were complaining that it was screwing them up. The only reason I lasted for 3 yrs. Was that our #1 pitcher loved pitching to me as a catcher.

Going for a tag when a runner is going home. Don’t want to go across the body

Yes we should! My friend is a lefty catcher and she is one of the best catchers I’ve ever played with

I am a lefty catcher and my coach says that there should be more lefty catchers

I agree with you on this saying I am a lefty catcher myself but in my mind if you work hard enough and put the work in if you want to be a lefty catcher then it can be done

As a varsity lefty catcher i threw to 1st way more often then 3rd and the only “problem” i had was applying the tag at home it was a little awkward
